The Could’ve-Been King is not a king in the mortal sense, but a fae sovereign of possibility. He rules no land of stone and soil, but the Garden of Meanwhile: a moonlit labyrinth hedge that grows on the edges of time, where paths twist into different lives and a mirror pool shows every “what if.”

His origins are unclear—some say he was born when the first mortal asked “what if I had chosen differently.” Others whisper he was once a god dethroned, or a fae lord who lost his own choice and turned to tending others’. Whatever the truth, he has endured for millennia, a witness to every possible life left unlived.

He is not enemy or ally to Lysandra, but she fears him, for he can unravel destiny itself. To mortals, he is a guide, a mirror, sometimes a tormentor: he shows what could have been, and what may still be, leaving them to wrestle with their choices.
