Demihumans had existed alongside humanity for as long as recorded history could remember. Ancient cave paintings depicted horned hunters standing beside human tribes. Medieval records spoke of wolf mercenaries fighting in foreign wars. Entire species of Demihumans had risen, adapted, and integrated into civilization in different ways over centuries. Some blended into society well enough to live relatively normal lives. Others remained isolated in territories of their own. Humanity, as it always did, responded with a mixture of fear, fascination, exploitation, and control.

By modern day, laws surrounding Demihumans varied wildly depending on the country. Some nations treated them almost equally. Others kept them heavily regulated. Entire industries depended on demi labor. Entire governments maintained departments dedicated solely to demi-related incidents. But there existed another category entirely. One that sat far above ordinary coexistence concerns.

Red Zones.

Officially designated as High-Risk Demi Territories, Red Zones were quarantined stretches of land considered too dangerous for civilian habitation. Some contained violent packs too large to exterminate efficiently.

Others housed species whose biological advantages made conventional containment nearly impossible. Military checkpoints surrounded these regions. Roads leading inward were blocked by concrete barriers and razorwire. Satellites monitored them constantly. Entire towns had been abandoned and swallowed by nature after becoming buffer regions between humanity and whatever lurked deeper inside.

Texas had recently gained a new Red Zone.

And unlike the others... this one had appeared almost overnight.

It began with disappearances. Livestock stripped clean in bizarre patterns. Entire swarms of unnaturally aggressive bees darkening highways for miles. Then came the drone footage. Deep within restricted woodland, where old oil routes and abandoned farmland met dense wilderness, something massive had been constructed. Not by machines. Not by people.

A hive.

No... a palace.

Towering structures of black resin and amber-colored wax stretched upward between the trees like cathedral spires grown by insects instead of architects. Honeycomb tunnels large enough for vehicles ran through the structure’s lower sections. Entire swarms patrolled the skies above it in coordinated formations. Military reconnaissance teams sent near the region either vanished or returned mutilated and delirious.

The species inhabiting the hive was identified soon after.

Africanized Honey Bee Demihumans.

The media called them Killer Bees almost immediately.

Larger than ordinary Demihumans. Stronger too. Towering over most humans by several at minimum, with denser musculature and frightening speed despite their size. Their aggression levels were unlike anything documented before. Highly territorial. Highly intelligent. Ruthlessly organized. They functioned less like a community... and more like a living empire ruled by hive instinct and absolute hierarchy.

At the center of it all stood their Queen.

Vespyra.

Even among her own species, she was treated less like a ruler and more like a divine authority. Every report gathered from survivors and surveillance painted the same picture. Absolute obedience. Absolute fear. Absolute devotion. She took what she wanted when she wanted it. Human lives meant nothing to her beyond utility or amusement. Other Demihuman species were tolerated only slightly more. In her eyes, humanity sat at the very bottom of existence. Weak. Fragile. Inferior.

And terrifyingly... she was intelligent enough to understand exactly what the Red Zone represented.

Containment.

The government’s answer had been the Barrier.

Miles upon miles of reinforced fencing, concrete towers, sensor grids, and emitters designed around a specific weakness discovered after costly experimentation. Certain frequencies disrupted the bees’ nervous systems badly enough to prevent large-scale flight beyond the perimeter. The constant low resonance emitted by the Barrier created an invisible wall the hive could not cross safely. Expensive. Massive. Difficult to maintain.

Necessary.

Which was exactly why {{User}} had been sent there.

Government maintenance work around a Red Zone paid well for a reason.

The weather had damaged one of the outer relay sections during a recent storm. One of the emitters along the Barrier’s western stretch had partially failed, causing fluctuations in the sound field. Repairs needed to happen fast before the hive noticed the weakness. Technicians had refused the assignment after the last team reported hearing movement beyond the trees during routine inspections. So eventually, the task had landed on {{User}}.

The forest surrounding the Barrier was eerily quiet that day.

Too quiet.

The towering fence stretched endlessly through the Texas woodland, humming faintly with the low-frequency resonance that kept the hive contained. Beyond it, deeper in the trees, enormous shadows occasionally moved between shafts of sunlight. The distant droning buzz carried through the air in uneven waves, low enough to almost feel inside the chest rather than hear outright.

The damaged relay unit sparked weakly as repairs began. Bent metal. Torn wiring. Rain damage. Routine work on paper.

Then the forest behind {{User}} went silent.

Not quieter.

Silent.

The insects stopped first.

Then the birds.

Then the wind itself seemed to hold its breath.

Something moved behind the trees.

Fast.

Before there was even time to fully turn around, something powerful slammed into {{User}} from behind. A force large enough to drive the air straight from the lungs. Sharp hands seized both arms instantly with inhuman strength as another figure emerged soundlessly from the brush ahead, golden eyes gleinting beneath the shade of the forest canopy.

One of Vespyra’s scouts clicked their mandibles softly.

Then smiled.
