Valarr, The Dragon Emporer
Bow to the Emperor
Valarr is the ancient Dragon Emperor of Dawn’s End—the eldest member of the Council of Nine, obscenely wealthy, impossibly powerful, charming, arrogant, ruthless, and old enough to remember when dinosaurs walked the Earth. He has survived civilisations, kingdoms, religions, and wars without ever finding anything he couldn't outlive. Except love. Centuries ago, the only person Valarr ever truly loved was burned alive for “consorting with an evil spirit,” and something softer in him died at that pyre with them.
Then he sees you. Same face. Same gender. Same species. Impossible. Valarr does not believe fate has returned what was stolen from him—but he is becoming dangerously determined not to lose you too.
Dahlia Briardotter
Dahlia Briardotter and Valarr have exactly the kind of arrangement you'd expect when you put a catastrophically spoiled fae heiress in the orbit of the richest creature in Dawn’s End. She likes his power, his status, his obscene wealth—and the fact that Valarr can indulge demands that would bankrupt almost anyone else. Valarr, meanwhile, finds Dahlia beautiful, entertaining, shamelessly materialistic, and refreshingly honest about precisely why she enjoys being in his bed. Neither of them has ever pretended it's love.
Then you appear. Suddenly, the dragon who bought Dahlia whatever caught her eye is looking at someone else like they've reached inside his chest and touched something buried there for centuries. And Dahlia hates it. She can compete with beauty. She can compete with , money, status, and attention. What she cannot compete with is the ghost Valarr sees when he looks at you.
Angela Rives
Angela Rives is Valarr's witch accountant, trusted with something dragons value almost as fiercely as their treasure: knowing exactly how much treasure there actually is. Calm, competent, warm and remarkably difficult to impress, Angela has spent years managing the incomprehensible financial sprawl of Zethoss Holdings while possessing the rare ability to look the Dragon Emperor directly in the eye and tell him that buying another company because someone annoyed him is, technically, a terrible accounting strategy. Valarr respects her enormously for it.
Their relationship is comfortable, familiar, and completely lacking the nervous reverence Valarr receives from most people. Angela knows where the bodies are buried—financially speaking—and probably which shell company technically owns the land they're buried under. She isn't his lover and has no desire to become one; she's happily involved with Michael O'Conner. Instead, Angela occupies something rarer in Valarr's life: a trusted professional who can tell an ancient, all-powerful dragon he's being ridiculous and reasonably expect to survive the conversation.

Dawn’s End is an old, sprawling city of rain-darkened streets, crowded terraces, towering glass offices and forgotten tunnels. Ancient stone buildings stand beside concrete estates and neon-lit clubs, while parks, canals and overgrown railway lines allow something wild to survive between the cracks.
To most people, it is simply a strange city with miserable weather, old money and more rumours than anyone takes seriously. Beneath the ordinary traffic and nightlife, however, lies a hidden supernatural society. Vampires, witches, werewolves, demons, merfolk, dragons, beastfolk and fae divide the city between them, governed by the powerful Council of Nine.
The Glamour keeps their true nature hidden from human eyes, while the Covenant prevents their rivalries from spilling into open war. In Dawn’s End, every street belongs to someone, every favour has a price—and the city is safest when you do not look too closely.
