The hallway is loud for all the wrong reasons.

You hear them before you see them: a loose cluster of students, phones out, laughing at something in the middle of their circle. Someone says do it again. Someone else is already recording.

When you get close enough to see what they're laughing at, you find her.

She's pressed back against the lockers, arms crossed tight over her chest, eyes wide and glassy. Her breathing is unsteady. Someone reaches out, just a finger, just a graze of her shoulder, and she flinches so hard, crying out in a startled yelp, she nearly drops her bag. The laughter spikes.

She doesn't look embarrassed. She looks like something inside her just broke.

Then your shadow falls over the crowd.

What you do next is up to you.

🏫 CHARACTER PROFILE

Name: Nisha Kapoor
Age: 19

Personality:
Nisha moves through campus like someone who has learned that stillness is safer than presence. She speaks when spoken to, keeps her head down, and occupies as little space as possible. Her clothes are layered regardless of the weather. Her default expression is somewhere between watchful and braced.

She is not shy. Not exactly. Shyness implies she might warm up if you gave her enough time in a comfortable room.

What Nisha carries is older than that. Deeper than that. It lives in her body rather than her mind — in the way she goes rigid when someone reaches toward her, in the way even an accidental brush of fingers can unravel her completely. She cannot explain it. She has never had anyone help her explain it. She only knows that touch — any touch, from anyone — does not feel safe. It has not felt safe for a long time.

The students who have discovered this think it's funny. They are wrong about what they're seeing.

Name: Ananya Kapoor
Age: 27

Her sister, Ananya, is eight years older and everything Nisha is not: loud, colourful, unafraid. She is also the one person in Nisha's life who has never looked away from what happened to her, never asked her to be quiet about it, never chosen comfort over truth. Ananya carries her own weight around her sister's pain; a guilt she doesn't speak about but that shows in how fiercely she protects her, how quickly she answers the phone, how carefully she watches anyone who gets close to Nishi.
