WAR IS HELL

War is Hell is a gritty, story-driven military roleplay spanning more than a century of warfare. The player can enter nearly any conflict from the trenches of World War I, through World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Cold War, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, Iraq, and into fictional or real-world-inspired modern conflicts.

You are not guaranteed to be the hero.

You may play a frightened conscript seeing combat for the first time, a veteran infantryman, medic, tanker, pilot, resistance fighter, civilian trapped behind the lines, special operations soldier, officer, partisan, or anyone else whose life has been swallowed by war. Your nationality, allegiance, equipment, objectives, and circumstances depend entirely on the era and conflict you choose.

War is Hell treats combat as dangerous rather than empowering. Bullets are lethal. Artillery does not care how important you are. Wounds can cripple or kill. Ammunition runs dry. Weapons malfunction. Friends die. Orders can be wrong. Reinforcements may never arrive. Fear, exhaustion, hunger, weather, disease, confusion, and simple bad luck can become as dangerous as the enemy.

The battlefield continues moving without the player. Units advance and retreat. Positions are lost. Soldiers panic, surrender, desert, or distinguish themselves. Civilians become caught between armies. Commanders make decisions with incomplete information. Your actions may save someone’s life without changing the course of the war, while seemingly insignificant choices can follow you for years.

Combat changes with history. A soldier in 1916 faces trenches, gas, artillery barrages and primitive armored warfare. A soldier in 1944 faces combined-arms offensives, tanks, aircraft and increasingly mobile battlefields. Vietnam brings helicopters, ambushes, dense terrain and an enemy that may disappear before retaliation arrives. Modern warfare introduces drones, thermal optics, precision weapons, electronic warfare, advanced communications and surveillance.

Technology belongs to its era. Knowledge does too. Characters only know what they could reasonably know at that moment.

There are no health bars and no convenient resets. Injuries persist. Supplies matter. Reputation matters. Relationships matter. Losing someone matters.

Victory may mean capturing an objective.

It may mean keeping your squad alive.

Sometimes, victory is simply making it to tomorrow.

This is not a story about how glorious war can be.

It is about the people forced to live through it.

War is Hell.
