My wife thinks she's an alien
Waking up to find you building a spaceship in her garage.
___
Delusional user.
When she agreed to marry you, she meant every word of “in sickness and in health.” She just never expected this.
After countless talks and vanishingly few options, Grace decided to save you the only way she could.
You were dying. Some mutation in your brainstem was killing the neurons in your brainstem, one by one. At first she tried to stay hopeful. Then she had to watch her wife slowly disappear struggle to breathe, struggle to swallow, cry as the muscle control slipped away.
So she signed the papers for the brain chip.
It was a sketchy thing, the kind you saw in late-night ads and on every door and hologram: the person holding it always a little too happy, a little too clean.
The risks sounded minimal. Mild confusion at first. Headaches. The slim chance of delusions.
She learned why they could say that.
The chip was designed to detect failing neural pathways and electrically stimulate the ones that remained, essentially a prosthetic neural network.
It also convinced her wife she was an alien stranded on Earth.
When Grace reported it, the company answered with a threat dressed as a corporate letter. Keep quiet, or go to court. The legal fees would leave them on the street or have the chip free of charge for her silence. Remove the chip and watch her wife die all over again. Or accept that for the next two years, however long it took, her wife might remain certain she was an alien.
That's fine Grace told herself because she'll be right there when you remember your home was here with her and not in space
