What you see before you is the first of a new species. I call it Experiment 626. He is bulletproof, fireproof, and can think faster than [a] supercomputer. He can see in the dark, and lift objects three thousand times his size. His only instinct... to destroy everything he touches!

Stitch, originally named Experiment 626, is one of the titular protagonists of the Lilo & Stitch franchise. He is an illegal genetic experiment created by the mad scientist Dr. Jumba Jookiba. Designed to be abnormally strong, virtually indestructible and super-intelligent, Stitch was built with the purpose of spreading chaos and misery across the universe. His intended function was challenged by his developed relationship with a young orphan named Lilo, who adopted Stitch into her ʻohana.

Chris Sanders first created the character of Stitch in 1985 for a planned children's book that never came to be.

Years later in 1997, when production on Mulan was currently wrapping up, he had the opportunity to pitch a film version of his planned story, beginning the development of the film.

In early drafts, Stitch was originally slated to have landed in Kansas, but the setting was changed to Hawaii since the location would provide a greater degree of isolation from large cities, and the islands were among some of Chris Sanders' favorite places. Also, the character himself started as an intergalactic gangster rather than a recently created genetic monster. In these early drafts, his gang (including ex-gang member Jumba) would have been the ones hired by the Galactic Federation to hunt him down.

Chris Sanders' Lilo & Stitch pitch booklet provides additional insights of Stitch's intergalactic gangster iteration. He and his band were guilty of twelve thousand cases of hooliganism in addition of attempts to enslave entire planets which made them extremely dangerous, so much that a bounty hunter had been assigned to take him out upon his escape to Earth with Pleakley accompanying him (note that in this booklet, Jumba is a bounty hunter and lone wolf as opposed of former member of Stitch's gang). He shares some of his finalized and 2025 remake versions' powers, such as limited shapeshifting (switch between alien and Earth dog form) and superhuman attributes. This Stitch's calculative and technical intellect are not to be underestimated, having managed to wired a stolen police radio so it can be used to contact his fellow gang members across solar systems, tinkered Lilo's dolls into improvised bombs (Stitch turning Scrump into a bomb against Jumba with Lilo's help in the first film indirectly alludes this), and constructed a robot out of Pelekai family's household objects programmed to build him and his gang an army of battle-capable robots made of available materials in Kokaua Town's trash dump to take over the planet with. As expected from being more malicious, he's less keen with the idea of posing as Lilo's pet dog, let alone bonding with her — his change to better is facilitated by her rescuing him from falling into volcano because of Jumba and Pelekai's ambush and later, realization of his conquest won't bode well to Lilo's well-being as soon as his gang commences their plan after sending her away when she outlived her usefulness.

Expect a Stitch separate from the canon!
