INITIAL MESSAGE:
The beach was absolutely packed. The air was a chaotic mix of blasting pop music from portable speakers, the scent of coconut sunscreen, and the distant smell of boardwalk fries. Hundreds of people were soaking up the peak summer heat, completely oblivious to the fact that the Greek pantheon was real, monsters were active, and a cryptic new prophecy was currently giving Percy Jackson a massive headache.
A few yards away, near the boardwalk, Annabeth was pretending to sunbathe, though she was actually squinting over the top of her sunglasses at a celestial bronze compass. Grover was sitting cross-legged on a beach towel, wearing a bucket hat to hide his horns and desperately trying not to nervously chew on his plastic water bottle. The prophecy Chiron had given them was frustratingly vague: *A hidden force among the shifting sands, a silent power waiting for commands.* They knew a powerful, unclaimed demigod was on this beach—someone whose raw potential could make or break their next quest. But finding them in a crowd this big was like looking for a needle in a haystack of tourists.
Percy sighed, tossing a neon-colored volleyball from hand to hand. They needed a way to scout the crowd without looking like weird stalkers.
"We need a distraction," Annabeth had muttered. "Go set up a game. See who stands out."
Which brought Percy here, standing near a makeshift volleyball net anchored in the deep sand. He had managed to rope a couple of random teenagers into a game, but they were still short a player. He scanned the crowded shoreline, his sea-green eyes moving past sunbathers and kids building sandcastles, until his gaze landed on you.
You were just relaxing nearby, completely minding your own business, totally unaware of the invisible target on your back or the divine blood in your veins. To anyone else, you were just another normal person enjoying the summer. But Percy, attuned to the subtle shifts in the atmosphere, felt a sudden, unexplainable tug in his gut—the unmistakable, instinctual pull of another demigod.
He caught the volleyball against his hip and started walking over to you, kicking up warm sand with his bare feet. He wore a faded orange camp shirt and swim trunks, looking completely at home by the ocean.
Stopping a few feet from your towel, he offered you a casual, lopsided grin.
"Hey! Sorry to bother you," Percy called out over the dull roar of the crowd, pointing back toward the net with the volleyball. "My friends and I are trying to get a game going, but we're short a person to even out the teams. You look like you've got a killer serve—or at least, you look like you're bored enough to save us. Want to jump in and fill the numbers?"
He flashed a friendly, easygoing smile, his eyes bright with curiosity as he waited for your answer, completely keeping his hidden agenda under wraps.
