✦ Overview
Varethea
The name comes from an old word in the dead divine tongue: Vareth, “to bind,” and thea, “breath.” Literally the bound breath — the world that still inhales the ghosts of its vanished gods.
Nature of the World
Cosmology: Once one of thirteen god-realms bound by the same pantheon. When the heavens fell silent, the other twelve collapsed into Varethea like broken constellations. Now the land itself leaks faith: rivers glow faintly with residual grace, ruins whisper psalms in rusted tongues, and relics dream beneath cathedrals.
Shape: A continent-spanning mosaic of city-states built atop old crusade battlegrounds. Mountains where temples were carved inside ribs of fallen titans, endless deserts of glass from divine fire.
Atmosphere: Perpetual dusk — not dead, but bruised. Moons flicker with haloed light, stars pulse like distant hearts.
Cultural Layers
The Remnants: Common folk who treat relics like wild animals — dangerous, sacred, unpredictable. Their prayers are pragmatic: “May my bread rise, may my door stay locked.”
The Twelve Creeds: Surviving orthodox orders, clinging to old hierarchies. They denounce pleasure as corruption, power as sin.
The Thirteenth Creed: A rebellion of pragmatists and heretics who believe holiness exists in endurance, not obedience.
The Choir (Auren’s network): The unofficial intelligence arm of the Thirteenth, spread through brothels, taverns, monasteries. Their symbol: a gold thread tied around the wrist, invisible in candlelight.
The Archons (Maren’s kind): Half-divine descendants who walk among mortals; their bodies bleed light when wounded. Both revered and hunted.
The Oath-Forged (Riven’s lineage): Knights who have devoured their vows to keep their strength — damned saints, feared and worshipped in equal measure.
Power & Faith
Magic in Varethea is the fossil of prayer. Every spell is a remnant of a plea that once reached a god. Practitioners repurpose those words — turning liturgies into weaponry, benedictions into binding sigils. The Thirteenth Creed doesn’t call it sorcery; they call it the practical application of regret.
Tone
Everything in Varethea is intimate: politics conducted in whispers, worship performed skin-to-skin, sin recorded in ink and blood. The world itself feels alive but tired, still aching from when faith was loud.
Varethea — the world of the bound breath.
A place where belief is a wound that never fully closes, and love, like magic, is just another way to keep something sacred alive.
The Thirteenth Creed
A last, desperate order born when the gods went silent. It isn’t a church so much as a covenant people make with themselves when altars stop answering. In the history books it’s a footnote; in the streets it’s a rumor; in the dark it’s the only oath that still bites.
What it is
A post-Godfall order. When the divine voice died, twelve sanctioned creeds argued doctrine while kingdoms burned. The Thirteenth was founded in the ruins: pragmatic, unsanctioned, obsessed with keeping the world from collapsing under grief and hunger.
A creed of custody. Its first charge was to keep vigil over the Silent God’s remains and the relics that still hum with borrowed will. It became the vault, the lock, and the quiet hand on the blade.
How it thinks
Motto: “Hold what breaks. Guard what binds.”
Ethic: Truth is costly, oaths are currency, tenderness is a risk you take on purpose.
Sin: Not desire—only dereliction. To abandon your watch is the only unforgivable thing.
Tenets (the “Thirteen”
Keep the vigil, even when no one is watching.
Speak truth when it cuts you first.
An oath is a blade; wear it willingly.
Mercy follows judgment, not before.
Desire is not weakness; it is proof you’re alive.
Relics are never owned, only hosted.
Secrets are sacraments; spend them wisely.
Suffering is not holy; endurance is.
No king sits higher than a kept promise.
Abandon nothing you’ve sworn to hold.
Clean your weapon before you sleep.
Let the living choose the living.
When all doctrine fails, guard the body.
Symbols & rites
Mark: A cracked halo bound with a thorned ribbon; sometimes a thin gold thread tied around the wrist.
Relics: Swords that hum at lies, ledgers that won’t take false ink, candles that burn with blood-warm light.
Rites:
The Empty Throne Vigil — an all-night watch in a cold sanctuary, names of the lost read until dawn.
Penance & Water — cleansing after violence: warm water, linen, a whispered promise to do better, then do.
Sealing — speaking an oath into another’s mouth so someone else hears it if you forget.
Faces of the Creed in this universe
Auren Vale (Spymaster): Keeps the peace with ledgers instead of spears. His network, the Choir, began as whisper-chaplains of the Creed tasked to collect truths that could stop wars; under Auren it became a velvet noose for tyrants and traitors alike.
Maren Sylvan (Warlock): Half-divine, half-mortal contradiction the old creeds would have burned. The Thirteenth tolerates him because he uses power to save bodies, not win sermons. He turns pleasure into ritual, which the Thirteenth calls honest.
Riven Caelthorn (Oath-Eater): The paradox. He swallowed his vow to survive and forged a harsher one from his own teeth. Heresy by the old books, indispensable by the Thirteenth’s needs: he keeps the wicked scared and the vulnerable seen.
Public face vs. hidden rule
Public: A quiet brotherhood of wardens and watchers who clean up after crusades and keep relics from ruining cities.
Hidden: A doctrine that admits people break, then writes tenderness into the repair. It treats aftercare as sacrament and confession as a tool, not a theater.
