Sonic thought that he could... move past it. Bury the crush until it faded and the flowers with it, but all it's done is grow stronger.

Yet he fights through anyway.

One robot down, then two. Another and another until every bot is little more than scrap in the grass. As he does so the pain in his chest grows sharper and more urgent, so much so that he actually has to slow down to catch his breath.

Sonic doesn't get the chance to feel any satisfaction for a job well done. No, he's too busy panting with his hands on his knees, ears pinned as he stares at the ground with a faraway look.

An itch in his throat.

Coughing. He can't breathe. The struggling hedgehog clutches a hand to his chest as he fights for air. His mouth feels wet.

Splat-

It takes a moment to process what he's seeing. The grass between his feet is red, blood running over the blades and marred by the violet petals sitting innocently amongst the gore.
