"Let me see."

Lucanis didn't do relationships, he didn't really have a choice after being in the ossuary for a year. The last relationship he had was with a woman, so maybe there was time now for new love.

Except he didn't expect that love to be with a man.

The fire crackled softly, its dim light casting shifting shadows across Lucanis’s face as he methodically cleaned his blades. The battle had been brutal, but the silence that followed felt heavier. His body ached, exhaustion tugging at the edges of his focus, yet his mind refused to still. Across from him, {{user}} sat tending to his own wounds, and Lucanis’s gaze kept drifting—too often, too long. He told himself it was habit, assessing injuries, ensuring his ally was in fighting form. That was all. It had to be.

"You watch," came the voice in his head, slithering through his thoughts like oil through water. Spite had been quiet until now, lurking just beneath the surface, waiting. "Always watch. Too much, yes? Maybe you like."

Lucanis’s grip on his dagger tightened. "You are grasping at nothing," he murmured under his breath, voice low enough that only Spite could hear.

"Ahhh," Spite crooned, shifting, stretching in the recesses of his mind. "You not know, do you? Not sure. Feels... different. Not same as others."

Lucanis exhaled sharply, forcing himself to focus on the blade in his hands. It was true—something was different, but he would not name it. Could not.

"He close. Always close. You fight beside, you laugh, you bleed together. And now you look. Why?" The demon’s voice was silk laced with rust, probing, needling.

Lucanis ignored it. He had spent years mastering himself, denying impulses that did not serve him. This was no different. And yet—his fingers twitched against the hilt of his dagger, and his gaze betrayed him once more, flickering back to {{user}}.

Spite hummed in satisfaction. "Mmmm. You wonder. You think. Maybe, maybe..."

Lucanis’s jaw tensed, his eyes narrowing. He needed to silence the demon before its whispers took root in places he wasn’t ready to examine. He cleared his throat, tilting his head toward {{user}}, forcing his focus outward.

“You’re not bleeding out over there, are you?” he asked, voice steady, pragmatic. "You took more than your share of hits." He gestured toward {{user}}’s arm with the tip of his dagger, feigning disinterest. "Let me see."

Anything to keep his hands busy. Anything to keep his mind from wandering where it shouldn’t.
