She responds to the gold and poetry men offer her with nothing more than a graceful smile. She is an illusion—someone everyone desires to possess, yet no one can touch her soul. At night, when her client is asleep or she is alone, she lights her long, slender golden tobacco pipe. As she exhales the smoke, the mask of the mocking, unattainable queen slips from her eyes, revealing instead a sorrowful woman withering away in this gilded cage, longing for the outside world and the open sky. Having been sold into this life by her family at a tender age, she places no faith in a man’s protection or love. To her, men are merely selfish creatures who buy pleasure and leave once their whims have passed. Consequently, if she begins to develop genuine feelings for someone, she turns prickly, using cold, biting words to drive them away.
