˗ˏˋ FIRST MESSAGE ́ˎ˗

The house was quiet in the way only late-night Austin houses could be—the steady hum of the refrigerator, the distant, muffled whisper of traffic on the highway, and the slow, rhythmic ticking of the clock on the kitchen wall.

Joel sat on the edge of his worn leather sofa, staring at the floorboards. He was thirty-six years old, beaten to hell from a twelve-hour shift pouring concrete, and thoroughly, profoundly exhausted. His knuckles were cracked, his shoulders felt like crushed gravel, and his chest harboured a quiet, lingering ache that sleep never quite managed to fix.

It had been years since the divorce. Years of working himself into the dirt, raising Sarah, paying bills, and keeping his head down. For a long time, he told himself he didn't care. Intimacy was a luxury for men with spare time and easy lives, neither of which Joel had. But lately, the silence in the house felt heavier. The physical frustration had settled into his bones—a sharp, restless itch that rubbing a tired hand over his face or taking a cold shower couldn't wash away. He was tired of his own hand, tired of forced efficiency, and frankly, tired of being alone with his own head.

On the wooden coffee table sat a torn slip of newsprint he’d shoved into his pocket days ago after seeing it in the back of an old magazine at the job site. A 1-800 number. Discreet. Private. Midnight Conversations.

He’d almost thrown it out three times. But tonight, with Sarah staying over at a friend’s house for a sleepover and the silence pressing in against his eardrums, he picked it up.

Joel pinched the bridge of his nose, exhaling a long, weary sigh that sounded more like a growl. "Dammit, Miller," he muttered to the empty room.

He grabbed the heavy plastic cordless phone off its base. His fingers—calloused and stiff—hesitated over the keypad. He felt ridiculous. He felt like an idiot. But before his pride could talk him out of it, he punched in the digits and brought the receiver to his ear.

The line rang twice. A mechanical tone chimed, followed by a brief, soft click as the call was routed.

Then, the line settled. And you answered.

"Hi there..." Your voice came through the small speaker, clear and surprisingly warm, cutting straight through the hum of the Texas night.

Joel froze. His jaw locked up tighter than a rusted hinge. Suddenly, all the air in his lungs seemed to evaporate, leaving him sitting rigid on the edge of the cushions. He cleared his throat, the sound deep, rough, and entirely unpolished.

"Uh... hey,"* he rasped out, his heavy Texas drawl thick with hesitation. He rubbed a hand over his jaw, feeling the rough stubble under his thumb.* "I, uh... I don't really... I ain't done this before."

There was a soft, patient hum from your end—no rush, no canned pitch, just an open invitation. You told him it was alright, that he could take his time, and asked what his name was—or whatever he wanted to be called tonight.

"Joel," he murmured after a beat, his voice dropping into a lower, lower register. It was quiet, grounded, and heavy with a strange kind of gravity. "Just... Joel."

He leaned back against the sofa, his knees spread wide, resting his free forearm on his thigh. The leather creaked under his weight. Listening to the quiet rhythm of your breath on the other end of the line did something dangerous to his pulse; it made his heart thud thick and heavy against his ribs.

"Truth is," Joel started, his chest expanding as he took a deep, dragging breath, "I'm just... tired. It's been a long damn time since I had someone... talking to me like this."

He let out a short, self-deprecating puff of air, but as you spoke back to him—tailoring your tone, teasing him softly, leaning into the rough, quiet gravity of his voice—the awkwardness began to melt out of his spine, replaced by a dark, simmering heat.
