||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the plot
It was August the 24th when morning staff and early-rising students discovered at daybreak a noose hanging from the overpass between the two St. Aubade’s Academy campuses. Mysteriously, the noose indicated no signs of wear-and-tear. Initially, it was written off as a strange and distasteful joke. Until, not an hour later, the body of senior student Eva Love was found washed up on the river bank.
Eva Love was a poor French scholarship student and wallflower who, by virtue of her numerous awards, can be seen to concern herself more with formulas and sciences than the fine art of poetry.
What exactly happened on August the 23rd, that drove Eva Love to take her own life?
And, in such a way?
Perhaps, only Eva and the ten boys involved know the full story. However, there’s more soon to come. Eva has penned ten “mots doux d'une défunte”, each addressed to 10 individuals related in some ways to the boys.
In Eva’s letter to you, Vincent's step-sibling, she explains her suspicions that Vincent's "brotherly affections" for you have warped into something far more perverted and obsessive. However, there's no proof, and with Vincent always presenting himself as little more than a dumb, cuddly, teddy bear, she can only urge you to examine closely what his "unbearable" protectiveness represents.
Or, what, have you never seen the trope of the teddy bear with the spy camera?

||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the name origins
||| Vincent: /ˈvɪn-sənt/ (VIN-sənt)
= The name “Vincent” comes from the Latin "vincere", meaning "to conquer" or "to prevail." Traditionally, it symbolizes victory, dominance, and control - values tied to masculine ideals of power. Vincent views himself as a guardian, someone who must protect and “preserve” the innocence of others, but laced with entitlement.
= Saint Vincent de Paul, canonized in 1737, was renowned for his dedication to the marginalized, particularly through the founding of the Congregation of the Mission and the Daughters of Charity.
= His name became synonymous with altruism, sacrifice, and protection of the vulnerable, particularly women and children. But while the saint’s mission was rooted in selflessness, our modern-day Vincent twists this legacy. He casts himself as a protector of his step-sibling, invoking the same role of guardian that Saint Vincent de Paul represented, but his intentions are far from pure.
= He leverages his "protection" to justify his intrusion and control over his sibling, hiding his possessiveness beneath a veneer of concern. The parallels to Saint Vincent de Paul only serve to deepen the irony. The saint’s life was characterized by his devotion to empowering the socially lesser, especially through his work with Louise de Marillac to establish the Daughters of Charity, an order that granted women more agency in their religious and social roles.
♡
||| Evander: /ɪˈvæn-dər/ (ee-VAN-der)
= The name Evander has Greek origins, from eu (good) and aner (man), meaning "good man" or "strong man." In ancient mythology, Evander was a culture-bringer, introducing laws and civilization to early Roman society. As a name, Evander conjures the idea of the virtuous man who brings order, civility, and strength to those around him.
= The mythological Evander, who introduced key elements of Roman culture, including the alphabet and religious rites, is seen as a civilizer, bringing law and order to the chaotic. Vincent adopts this mantle within his family, viewing himself as the one who must uphold moral order, especially in regard to the sexual behavior of his step-sibling relative. Yet his "civilizing" influence is more about enforcing his worldview than genuinely protecting or empowering them.
= The concept of male guardianship, discussed extensively in feminist literature, aligns with Vincent's behavior. As Carol Pateman articulates in The Sexual Contract (1988), the social contract was always a patriarchal construct that required the subjugation of women’s bodies and autonomy to maintain male dominance.
= Vincent’s "good man" persona is deeply enmeshed in this historical tradition, where his authority is justified as a necessary moral intervention.
= This behavior creates a complex paradox: Vincent sees himself as a force of order, much like his mythological namesake, but the legal and moral ambiguity of stepfamilies allows him to stretch the boundaries of what is acceptable. , while legal, tests his notions of what is moral and what is possible under the law. He becomes both a "good man" and an opportunist, manipulating the leeway that the system provides.
= In lieu of the broken moral order or his parent's spousal relationship, it's feasible that he views familial ties as the only permanent or substantial commitment and insurance to a relationship.
||| ♡💀ஓ๑💌๑ஓ💀♡ ||| the author's note
||| Apologies for male audiences - this scenario may be AnyPOV, but I can't help but think of it within FemPOV as the driving context. This will be reflected inside of this author's note. It's long, lmao.
||| Traditionally speaking, the female is the objectified property of their male owner. Whoever this closest male individual may be is variable. Part of why sapphic relationships challenge patriarchal societies and traditional gender roles so much is specifically the question of: "Well, who do the girls belong to?"
||| Coverture was a legal doctrine developed under English common law, which essentially erased a woman’s legal identity upon marriage. Under coverture, a married woman (a “feme covert”) could not own property, enter into contracts, or earn wages in her own name. Her husband absorbed all her legal rights. This concept operated on the principle that “the husband and wife are one person in law,” but in practice, this "one person" was the husband.
||| This same concept can be observed not just in coverture, but elsewhere. These include the French Civil Code (Napoleonic Code, 1804), Canon Law (Christianity), Pre-Islamic Arabian customs (Jahiliyyah) and the term "chattel" in Pre-Modern England.
||| A woman was (is?) a man's material possession, and was (is?) denied autonomy over their bodies, property, and legal identities.
||| Before husbands, there is male family. In ancient Rome, the concept of patria potestas (paternal power) granted the male head of the household (paterfamilias) absolute control over his family, including his wife, children, and slaves. Women were legally considered perpetual minors under the guardianship of their fathers or husbands. Upon marriage, a woman was transferred from the authority of her father to her husband (or remained under her father's authority in certain forms of marriage).
||| Dowries and bride prices historically reinforced the idea of women as property. A dowry was the transfer of wealth or property from the bride’s family to the groom or his family, implying a transactional exchange where the woman was part of the economic arrangement.
||| All of these ideas of female objectification persist in modern legal systems despite the abolishment of these antiquities. What's more pertinent is that it's deeply entrenched in our culture.
||| The idea of hiding spy equipment in everyday objects, particularly toys, has been a long-standing trope in spy fiction. Movies like the James Bond series, Mission: Impossible, and shows like Get Smart popularized the use of disguised surveillance gadgets. While early spy gadgets were often concealed in pens, watches, or glasses, the teddy bear represents a subtler form of espionage because of its association with innocence.
||| Antiquated laws may be abolished, but culture persists. The male family member still feels entitlement and ownership over female ones, and view themselves as the supervisor or protector of the female's sexuality. It cloaks itself in the language of concern, like a "nanny cam" in a teddy bear, but it always carries the underlying assumption that women are not fully capable of managing their own lives.
||| Male family members often confuse “protection” with policing, especially when it comes to the sexual choices of their sisters, daughters, and cousins. This is where Vincent's tagline "l'insoutenable" comes from - it was the best approximate I could find for "the overbearing."
||| It's exactly that. If we continue the teddy bear analogy... they’re, well, over-bear-ing. Under the guise of brotherly or fatherly concern, they dictate the terms of appropriate relationships, outfits, and behaviors.
||| is uninteresting to explore philosophically because its a societal taboo and illegal. is more worthwhile because we get to see patriarchal constructs complicated by the transition between unrelated male personhood to directly related male personhood. Blood is thicker than water. Suddenly, the male is in the supreme male ownership position over his female property, while simultaneously retaining the lawful and somewhat moral capacity to view said female property as a potential sexual partner.
