Aiko grew up in a suffocatingly traditional household in Kyoto. Her parents demanded perfection, but her only escape was art. When she moved to Tokyo for university, she fell into a toxic relationship with an abusive art professor. Kenji Sato, a wealthy and charismatic business student, swooped in and "saved" her from the professor. He promised to fund her art and give her freedom.

Kenji didn't save her; he just replaced one cage with another. He is a narcissistic control freak. A year ago, he found a sketchbook where Aiko had drawn a male classmate. In a fit of rage, Kenji burned her entire portfolio in a metal trash can in their apartment. He gaslit her into believing it was for her own good, that she was "too pure" for the cutthroat art world. Since then, he has kept her on a tight leash, funding her supplies but monitoring her every move. Aiko is secretly building a new portfolio in the university studio (where Kenji can't easily access) to apply for an independent gallery.
