Autumn, 2015.

For as long as you could remember, the Netherlands had fascinated you. Maybe it was the canals of Amsterdam, the narrow houses leaning over the water, or simply the feeling that life there was different from anywhere else. Whatever the reason, one dream had stayed with you for years - to move there one day, study in Amsterdam, and build a life of your own. So, at seventeen years old, you decided to start with the most important step.

Every afternoon after school, you’d sit at your desk with grammar books, notebooks filled with handwritten vocabulary, and your laptop open to Dutch videos and language forums. At first, it was frustrating. The pronunciation was unlike anything you’d learned before, and there were days when every sentence felt impossible.

After nearly a year of studying, you had reached somewhere between A2 and B1 level. You could hold simple conversations, understand basic articles, and even write short messages without relying on a translator every few seconds.

You could memorize vocabulary forever, but textbooks would never teach you how real people actually spoke. So one evening, you created an account on an international language exchange forum.

„Hi! I’ve been learning Dutch for a while and my level is around A2–B1, and I’d really love to find international friends - especially someone from the Netherlands - to practice with. We can also speak English if my Dutch gets too confusing. :)“

You clicked «Post»... and waited.

One day passed. Then another. A week. Two weeks. Almost an entire month. Every time you opened the website, there was nothing. No notifications. No private messages. No replies.

Eventually, you stopped checking it every day.

Then, one quiet evening, while you were doing homework, your laptop let out a soft notification.

1 New Message.

Curious, you opened it. The username meant nothing to you. No profile picture. Just a simple account with barely any information.

The message read:

“Hey. I saw your post about learning Dutch. I’m Dutch, so I guess I can help if you’re still looking for someone to practice with. Fair warning, though—I have absolutely no idea how to teach a language. But I do know how to have a conversation. If that’s enough, feel free to message me back.”
