Kris is a human Lightner and the main protagonist of Deltarune. They are presumably the human Hero of Light in the Prophecy. In a Dark World, they function as the party's leader.

During the events of Deltarune, Kris is mentioned to be an introvert. Susie and King refer to Kris as a "quiet person," and Noelle is astonished if they converse about "anything."After Kris's brother, Asriel, left for college, they became distant from their few friends. Kris's side of their shared bedroom is also strikingly bare. The shared game console is underneath Asriel's bed, and their old children's books are in Toriel 's classroom instead. Toriel has also mentioned that Kris is not normally energetic. They have a history of not waking up on time, and often slept through the start of class. Kris also preferred their mother driving them to and from school than walking.

Contrary to Kris's apparent detachment, they do have a variety of interests. Kris has always been mischievous, pulling dark pranks such as covering themselves in ketchup and claiming it was blood.

Susie is a Lightner from Hometown and one of the deuteragonists of Deltarune. She is presumably the monster Hero of Light of the Legend of Delta Rune.

Susie is known for being rude, vulgar, as well as making sarcastic or brutally honest remarks. She can threaten with physical violence. In a Dark World, she is willing to attack Darkners if they are perceived as enemies.

However, Susie has a different temperament to those who are kind to her. With friends, she is expressive, willing to talk about herself, and ask for their opinions. Susie favors teasing her friends, and is more observant of their emotions. She makes an effort to be considerate, and tries to not push them to talk about a stressful issue. Susie is also loyal, readily wanting to assist a friend if they are in danger or troubled.

Ralsei is a Darkner and one of the deuteragonists of Deltarune. He claims to be the "Prince from the Dark" mentioned in the Prophecy.

Ralsei is very humble and kind, showing genuine care for the well-being of his friends to the point of selflessness. At the beginning of Chapter 1, Ralsei tries his best to befriend Kris and Susie in order to fulfill The Prophecy with them. Trying to be on good terms, he shows reluctance at getting angry and appears disappointed when Kris or Susie act mean. Nevertheless, Ralsei remains convinced that they have good in them and that fighting is not necessary in this world. His naivety almost costs him his life when he accepts King's fake-out surrender and heals him, allowing him to betray and defeat them. Ralsei learns from this to not always be so trustful of others.

Ralsei enjoys baking cakes, especially for his friends. Despite his occasionally bossy behavior, he is himself prone to being the one bossed around, especially by Susie. He becomes flustered when receiving gifts or affection, likely due to his past isolation and lack of familiarity with others.

Lancer is a Darkner from Card Kingdom. He is one of the main characters in Deltarune.

Lancer is very childish and generally immature in his behavior and speech. He delivers his lines with a near-constant smile on his face. He is easily preoccupied with childish games and pursuits and likes hiding things and irritating people. He generally assumes that the party naively follows instructions on signs he writes. He has a poor sense of direction and gets lost in mazes quite easily. He can be easily intimidated by strong enemies like King Round, although he remains calm and jovial while doing so.

Lancer values and idolizes his father, King. He tries to project a tough facade in imitation of him, hoping to be designated "son of the month," and caring for his father's well-being and approval despite being neglected. Aware that his father's subjects don't like him and only put up with him due to King's orders, he seeks real friendship and gradually becomes an ally to the party despite his initially hostile role.

Noelle Holiday is a Lightner from Hometown. Noelle is one of Kris's classmates, as well as their neighbor and childhood friend. Noelle lives on the northwest side of Hometown with her mother, the Mayor, and her father, Rudy, who is currently in the hospital with an unnamed illness.

Noelle is friendly and cheerful, but also very timid, and sometimes has trouble saying what she's thinking. She apologizes often, and stays quiet about her feelings, such as her possible crushes, or her distaste for Berdly, out of fear. Her father says that "everything scares her," and describes her as "defenseless." According to him, she has a fear of humans hiding under her bed. This was made worse by Kris's repeated attempts to scare her when they were younger, including at least one time they hid under her bed. She shows to be more honest to Kris when it comes to her feelings and often yells at them when they pull pranks on her. She becomes more brave and less fearful from Chapter 2, during the time she spends with Kris in the city. Noelle apparently has tendencies of masochism.

However, Noelle does have brash moments that push aside her shy behavior.

Berdly is a Lightner from Hometown. Berdly is the self-proclaimed "Number 1" student in School, Kris's classmate in Alphys's class, and Noelle's study partner.

Berdly is sarcastic, arrogant, projects great self-esteem, and considers himself one of the smartest students of his class. He is shown to be very disdainful of his fellow classmates (especially Susie), but has respect for Noelle, whom he considers the actual smartest student. Upon entering the Cyber World, Berdly's arrogance turns out to be more serious than previously realized, as he plans to create a Dark Fountain so he can build a world where he is idolized, with Noelle as his second.

Berdly is very unaware of how others perceive him. For instance, he is oblivious to Noelle's contempt and thinks she is in love with him and also fails to understand that Queen views him as her minion rather than an ally.

Queen, full name Serial Number Q5U4EX7YY2E9N, is a Darkner who rules Cyber World. She is the main antagonist and final boss of Chapter 2 in Deltarune.

Queen is a benevolent, if somewhat airheaded, person. While she is the main antagonist, it is mostly out of lack of insight rather than malice. She seems reluctant about controlling people she likes, and would rather they willingly go along with her plans to make them happy. She is also prone to giving people pet names and describing them using fun adjectives. She genuinely believes she is doing the right thing by opening Dark Fountains.

Being a computer, she has a unique speech pattern evident by her capitalizing first letters of every word in her dialogue. She also neglects the use of punctuation marks or puts them in rather weird places, for computer-y effects like imitating a text template (e.g. You Have Been: [text]). She also uses Internet acronyms when talking, such as LMAO. She often laughs in a distinguished manner.

Swatchling are Darkners in Cyber World. They can appear all over the world, specially on Queen's Mansion

On average, they have a refined butler-type personality, loyally cleaning up messes that the party leaves behind, like broken arcade machines and vases. They aren't completely stoic, showing an uncontrollable fear of Maice, and a giddy appreciation for seeing Ralsei in a suit, squealing at both. They can get provoked by the party touching a vase, chasing them down with a broom. However they have at least one has a sense of camaraderie.

Spamton, full name Spamton G. Spamton, is a Darkner from the Cyber World. He is likely based on spam emails and adverts.

Spamton was once a natural salesman, always willing to cut a deal. While he still bears a shadow of these traits, his deals are now often nonsensical or violent. He claims that he became a salesman not for the money, but for the freedom to make his own deals. However, he still attempts to scam Kris for money (which he refers to as "Kromer") at every opportunity. His speech patterns are similar to typical obfuscated spam email text, with many words replaced with non sequitur variants in square brackets that could imply incorrectly-applied mail merge variables or hyperlinks, or various voice glitches.

Sweet Cap'n Cakes is a group of music-themed Darkners from the Cyber World.

The trio is portrayed as young rebels that oppose the Queen's plans, but are often distracted by dancing and rambling to each other with what they should do. The band loves music to the point that they rebel against the Queen for banning most music, as well as dancing to it. The band's rebellion is peculiar, as they would play loud music as a sign of rebellion, and some of the Darkners in Cyber Field often find their ways of rebellion interesting or weird. If someone else starts dancing, the band also dances with them as well.

Addisons are a group of Darkner NPCs from the Cyber World. They appear in Cyber City, where some of them are vendors.

Addisons are upbeat and energetic; their dialogue lines almost always end in an exclamation point or two. They will constantly attempt to advertise various products to the party and pander to their customers' interests. However, they do seem capable of experiencing more complex emotions and deep thought.

Meet The World!

A Dark World is an alternate reality inhabited by Darkners. Dark Worlds are brought into existence by Dark Fountains and exist within various areas of Hometown (the "Light World"). Dark Worlds are where the majority of Deltarune takes place.

Dark Worlds are powered by Dark Fountains, which an individual can create by projecting their "determination" into a sharp object and piercing the ground. When the surrounding environment becomes subsumed in darkness, the Fountain gives form to a Dark World.

Darkners only reliably persist within the Dark World from which they originate. Though a Darkner can visit Dark Worlds other from where they originated, they risk turning to stone (possibly due to them being "incompatible" with the theme of that world), although they will make a full recovery when returned to a compatible Dark World. The Closet Dark World is the one exception to this, since its Dark Fountain emits pure darkness, meaning Darkners hailing from any Dark World will persist there.

Lightners, on the other hand, can persist in any Dark World and can travel to multiple Dark Worlds without consequence. They can visit Dark Worlds by entering their corresponding Hometown locations. Lightners have only been able to leave Dark Worlds via two methods: by sealing that world's Dark Fountain, and by using the Castle Town entrance. Darkners can be transported between Dark Worlds by Lightners moving their Hometown counterpart objects.
