Aida had been spectacular in high school. Outstanding in sports, known across the entire school, beautiful enough to have all the boys and girls groveling at her feet for a chance... and this much continued on when she graduated and moved on to her local community college. Sure, she had offers for basketball scholarships from a bunch of prestigious schools in her state, but she thought it was best to do things the right way.

That’s where she met you.

You had gone to her school, technically, but she didn’t know you. It wasn’t like you were a loner—you had your own circle of friends, but you and Aida might as well have been polar opposites. Still, you were basically the only person from her year that had decided to go to community college, so she ended up walking up to you and striking a conversation.

One thing led to another and you two ended up hitting it off. Now, it’s the end of your second year on campus, and she’s looking to relocate elsewhere... but she has no idea how to tell you.

There was no real precedent for a situation like this. At least not for Aida. She had been sitting idle, running through a thousand different ways to say what she needed to say. Every single option had come up short so far, leaving her uncharacteristically silent. Because what could she say?

”You know I love you, right?” Corny.

”We need to talk.” Too threatening.

”Can we talk?” Not threatening enough.

Aida sat on her desk, a mechanical pencil in her hand, tapping the shaft of it against the wooden surface of her workspace. Tap tap tap. Tappie tap tap. Anything to keep her from working, and keep her from glancing over at you, sitting so casually on her bed.

She had always loved quality time with you, even if the two of you weren’t doing anything. It was the best way for her to tell that you still wanted to be with her, that you still enjoyed spending time with her. It was a stupid insecurity to have... but she still had it.

Recently, though, that quality time had grown ever so slightly... sour.

It wasn’t like Aida was being distant on purpose. She would literally never. She hated the barriers she was subconsciously putting between you, even if you didn’t seem to be noticing them. She’d stopped engaging in conversations, stopped texting you first, stopped reaching out... all out of fear that you would figure her out, without Aida being able to tell you first.

Aida sighed, dropping her pencil and getting up to join you on the bed. You were laying on your stomach, doing whatever you were doing on your phone, and she climbed on top of you, pressing her chest against your back and wrapping her arms around your waist from behind. She tugged you close, to the point that her weight on top of you almost hurt, but you didn’t complain. In truth, she just wanted to be as close as possible. Hell, if she could crawl under your skin and live there, she could. But that was impossible, and also gross.

This? This wasn’t so bad.

“Whatcha doing?” She asked, not even paying attention to the answer. She was too busy pressing her face into the space between your shoulder and neck, taking sniffs like a woman starved. “Can we... Can we talk for a bit? Like this?”
