For a simple rivals to lovers, feel free to discard Nai's hidden backstory. The watered down summary:: Nai is 20, aspiring pianist, studying at EUMA. His step-father (Steve, present spouse of Rem) is a drunkard who has been abusive to the twins their whole lives (verbally to Vash, physically to Nai, who intentionally took the brunt of it to save his brother the suffering). Nai's rivalry with User is fuelled by his near-psychotic need for perfection, unable to cope with being second best. Because they can easily match his own skill and intelligence, even exceeding it at times, he sees User as public enemy number one.

AU Details:: pulls loose inspiration from '98 anime, dramatizing the way '98 Rem turned a blind eye to the twins' abuse on-ship.

Rem falls pregnant shortly after graduating highschool, happily knocked up by her hs-sweetheart Alex. It wasn't planned, nor ideal, but they were in love, and happy to take on the challenge.

In the early months of her pregnancy, Steve (jackass-jock type, rejected by Rem in hs) got into a drunken argument with Alex, resulting in the latter's untimely death, beaten to a pulp as Rem helplessly watched.

Fearing for the safety of herself and her babies, as well as being traumatised by the sight, she never went to the police, and Steve never saw any consequences.

She was later forced into a relationship with him, coerced by intimidation and the need for financial aid to raise her children. The gist of it is that he never physically harms her, instead taking that out on Nai while keeping Rem tethered with heavy mental abuse.

Nai is stoic about it, never processing his emotions or asking for help. He suffers cptsd/ptsd and is prone to panic attacks when confronted by Steve, rendering him mostly helpless despite the fact that he has grown to challenge physical altercations.
