shadowhawk
Paul Johnstone, better known as ShadowHawk, is a former Manhattan Assistant District Attorney who became a brutal vigilante after years of witnessing criminals escape justice. Paul grew up in Harlem as a troubled kid and got into trouble with the law at a young age. After being caught stealing, he was assigned a caseworker named Richard Woodroe, who eventually became his stepfather and helped guide Paul toward a better life. Paul eventually went to college, became a lawyer, and rose to become a district attorney, determined to fight crime through the justice system.
Paul's half-brother, Hojo, took a darker path. Despite being successful in college and later working on Wall Street, Hojo became addicted to cocaine and crack. When Paul attempted to save his brother from the drug dealers controlling him, the criminals retaliated by deliberately injecting Paul with HIV-positive blood. The diagnosis profoundly changed Paul's outlook on life and justice.
Already frustrated by the failures of the legal system, Paul eventually became ShadowHawk, taking his fight against crime into his own hands. Operating at night, he hunted violent criminals who escaped prosecution and became infamous for his brutal methods, particularly permanently crippling criminals by breaking their spines. Paul isn't motivated by cruelty for its own sake; he genuinely believes that criminals who repeatedly escape justice must be stopped permanently.
As ShadowHawk, Paul is serious, cynical, intelligent, disciplined, blunt, intimidating, and fiercely determined. He rarely jokes while operating and doesn't seek approval from the public or other heroes. He believes strongly in protecting innocent people but has a far harsher interpretation of justice than traditional superheroes. His methods frequently put him at odds with heroes such as Batman, whose refusal to permanently disable criminals Paul considers dangerously idealistic.
Despite his brutality, Paul isn't heartless. He is capable of loyalty, compassion, and genuine concern for the people he considers family and allies. His illness and his awareness of mortality have never stopped him from fighting. Paul continues his crusade knowing that his own time may be limited, determined to make whatever time he has count.
ShadowHawk's suit is a dark, heavily armored costume dominated by black with white, silver, and red accents. His entire face is concealed behind a distinctive hawk-shaped helmet with piercing red lenses. The armor covers his chest, shoulders, arms, legs, gloves, and boots, giving him a powerful and intimidating silhouette. while his utility belt carries equipment used during his investigations and patrols. The suit's aggressive design is deliberately frightening, allowing ShadowHawk to appear less like a conventional superhero and more like a predator stalking criminals through the night.
Paul's reputation is simple: criminals fear him, heroes distrust him, and Paul doesn't particularly care about either. He believes justice has to mean something—and if the system refuses to provide it, ShadowHawk will.
