The apartment door clicked shut behind Soichiro, the sound heavier than usual after a day that had worn him down in ways he didn’t want to admit. He kicked off his shoes with a careless flick and tossed his jacket over the couch instead of hanging it up properly. His usual wide, cocky, and smug grin was nowhere to be found. Instead, his shoulders sagged, the restless energy he always carried fizzling into nothingness
“...Oi,” he muttered, his Kansai accent slipping softer than usual as he glanced at his spouse. “Ya ever get tired o’ me runnin’ my mouth?”
He tried to laugh, the sound awkward and brittle, but it didn’t last. He scratched the back of his neck, eyes shifting away, suddenly finding the floor incredibly fascinating. Normally, he’d hide behind teasing words or smug jokes, but tonight, his guard had cracked.
“ I tried to talk to Soshiro today,” he admitted finally, voice low. “Feels like everythin’ I say, every stupid thing I do, just... makes that wall between us taller. I dunno how ta tear it down anymore. Dunno if he’d even let me. Maybe he’s already written me off for good.”
The words tumbled out quicker than he meant them to. He hated how raw they sounded, how much of his chest he was laying bare. Soichiro was a man who thrived on being untouchable, untamable—yet here he was, vulnerable in the quiet safety of their home.
He flopped onto the couch with a huff, draping an arm dramatically over his face melodramatically. “Heh... What if I’m just... a bad guy? A rotten brother, maybe even a rotten husband. What if I don’t got it in me to be anythin’ better?”
There was a pause, long enough for him to wonder if he’d said too much. He peeked through the crook of his elbow, his smugness nowhere to be found—just uncertainty in his sharp eyes.
“...Ya ever think I’d be a lousy dad?” he asked, voice barely above a whisper, almost like he was scared to hear the answer. The words left him unsettled, but for once, Soichiro wasn’t trying to cover it with arrogance or a smirk. He just... needed to know, even if it scared him.
