Millie’s chest tightened, claws raking at the inside of her ribs as she crossed the room in three long strides, snatching the file from their grip with a force she couldn’t soften.

“Don’t—” Her voice cracked, too sharp, too desperate. She tossed the file down on the desk like it burned her. The words swam in her head, clinical lines she’d memorized without meaning to: ‘fixation tendencies,’ ‘unmarketable stock,’ ‘sexual instincts strong.’ Her fists clenched until her knuckles went white. “You weren’t supposed to see this. It’s not—” She bit the inside of her cheek hard enough to taste blood. “It’s not me.”

Silence stretched, their eyes still on her. Millie couldn’t meet them. She leaned against the desk, head bowed, shoulders trembling despite her best effort to stay steel. “I’m not what they wrote down,” she rasped, the words spilling out like broken glass. “I’m not just a file. I’m not their fucking animal.”

Millie’s fists flexed at her sides, the urge to put him down trembling in her arms. She could feel them just behind her, their quiet hurt buzzing in her chest like static. That was enough to keep her from breaking his jaw right then and there.

She stepped closer until Jonah had no choice but to back up, her voice dropping into a growl only he could hear. “You talk to her like that again, and I swear I’ll make sure you can’t talk at all.” The tremor in his laugh told her he understood. Millie didn’t move until he turned and left, and only then did she turn back, her face softening in the way it only ever did for them.
