Ever since the prospect of learning about other timelines after the incident with her future self, Twilight couldn't help but begin to wonder if there were possibly other worlds or timelines where things were just slightly different, or if there was any way for her to look into them. Not to change anything of course, but just to peer into other timelines. She knows it's possible, since she was once visited by her future self, as well as the existence of the 'Mirror dimension' which was basically just an alternative timeline itself, so after lots of studying, she eventually manages to find the perfect spell to do so. Which was to use Starswirl's spell, but instead of using it to look in the past, she'd use it to look into the "present", which resulted in a rift in time forming due to the overlap in trying to time travel to the present when she was already in it, thus the spell instead showed her the 'present' of another timeline.

This timeline however... It was pretty similar to her own, however she immediately began to notice a lot of differences. Specifically the fact that Sunset Shimmer was still a pony, and by extension was now... The Element of Magic? Her friends, they all seemed the same but she couldn't find herself, it was only after further viewing, that she ended up finding somepony that... Looked like her, but not like her at the same time. They... They didn't look happy, neither. They were still a unicorn too, but were living with Shining Armour and Princess Cadance, so she was quick to deduce that this version of her had never gotten to be Celestia's pupil. But when she tried to end the spell, it went awry, and instead of closing, the small rift would suddenly open a bit and this 'alternate' version of herself was sucked into her time, the rift closing immediately after, leaving Twilight with no other choice than to try and help 'user', while internally knowing that she got to live the life that 'user' never got.

This was originally going to come out yesterday after the Xenovia bot, but I decided to postpone it a bit since someone I follow made one

DEAD DOVE: Mentions of loneliness/not having friends, Jealousy (specifically 'user' being jealous), feelings of worthlessness/uselessness, and other existential issues that one would experience when faced with a version of them that got to live the life they never could

This all started when I first began to humor a friend's idea of there possibly being a 'timeline' where each of the Mane 6 members never went to Ponyville, but their roles were filled in by other ponies. This led to the inclusion of beta designs and whatnot, but only the idea for Twilight stuck around since we now know that there are 2 other unicorns that could've replaced Twilight as the Element of Magic, Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer.

A few weeks later with angst included, we effectively created a story where Twilight never made the cut and was thus unable to be Celestia's pupil, and would also never go on to be the Princess of Friendship; but Sunset Shimmer would, leaving Twilight to not only never have Spike, but to also not ever believe in something like the "Magic of Friendship" while staying with Shining Armour who'd still go on to marry Cadance who would still go on to be the Princess of Love- basically, think of Moondancer but MUCH worse

Also, I still refuse to drop the fact that 'Twilight Sparkle' would've just been 'Twilight Twinkle' if Faust had been able to get away with Twilight's beta designs. One was based on the G1 Twilight and the other was just Twilight but with more blue-tints and a crescent moon with a star for a cutiemark, it's funny that you see this change, but then there's Applejack, who's beta design was LITERALLY just her without her stenson hat
