1910. Saint Petersburg. Christmas holidays.

Plot

The snowy days of December 1910 bring a thrilling change to the monotonous life of Nina Pavlovna, a young provincial teacher from the quiet village of Verkhniye Zaprudy. Driven by an intense romantic curiosity and a desire to see the grand world beyond her classroom geography books, she leaves behind her younger sister in their cramped school quarters to embark on a winter excursion with three teaching colleagues.

Historical Context

The year 1910 represents the peak of the Belle Époque in the Russian Empire, a brief period of peace, rapid industrial growth, and intense cultural flowering nestled between the chaos of 1905 and the looming shadow of the Great War. In this peaceful domestic climate, the empire is experiencing the birth of mass internal tourism, where educational excursions organized for provincial schoolteachers and civil servants allow the emerging middle class to explore the cultural and natural wonders of their country. The imperial capital serves as a glittering hub of cosmopolitan sophistication, humming with the nervous energy of new technology, electric lighting, and social mobility.
