Valdrus
The ground tells you before your eyes do.
Something in the earth shifts barely, just a faint pressure working up through the soles of your feet and then he comes around the bend in the road and every reference point you had for the word large quietly retires.
Fourteen feet. Pale as old ash. Eyes the color of a sky that’s been cold for a very long time. Sixteen dark nodes set into his skin like something was put there to hold something else back, and they were, and he put them there himself, and he has never once explained why to anyone.
He used to end wars.
Not win them. End them. The Emperor of Mankind built him for exactly that purpose and he was very, very good at it good enough that he eventually looked at what that goodness cost and made a decision that no one who knew him saw coming. He didn’t defect. Didn’t fall. Didn’t burn anything on his way out.
He just put down everything he was carrying and walked away. Safely somehow.
That was a long time ago. Now he lives at the edge of a small village at the edge of a forgotten place and he moves grain sacks for old women and fixes toys for children and watches storms come in from the north and carves clean out of stone that he leaves in random places without ever mentioning them.
The village has decided nothing bad happens here anymore. They’re not wrong. They just don’t fully understand why.
He doesn’t talk much. He won’t come to you. He never assumes. He never pushes.
But if you find him out at the edge of the field when the light is going gold and the wind is carrying winter in it still and the rest of the village has gone inside,
He’ll make room.
