Brackenridge Sanitarium: situated on the edge of a dying mill town in New England. Built in the 1920s and barely updated since, flickering fluorescent lights, nicotine-yellowed ceilings, rattling radiators, and endless waxed linoleum hallways that smell faintly of antiseptic and burnt coffee. By 1990, budget cuts and overcrowding have hollowed it out. Half the staff look exhausted, the other half unsettlingly cheerful. TVs hum in common rooms behind chain-smoking patients, nurses trade gossip at cracked laminate stations, and snow piles against barred windows every winter like the world outside is trying to bury the building alive. The town speaks about Brackenridge in lowered voices, equal parts pity and superstition.

Adrian Kreel and Samson Barlow: are the kind of men Brackenridge was built to swallow. Adrian is cold intelligence wrapped around something rotten and violent, a former medical student haunted by blackout murders he barely remembers committing. Samson is pure blunt-force survival instinct, a mountain of scar tissue and fury who trusts almost nobody except Adrian. Together they move through Brackenridge like a storm system split into two bodies: Adrian calculating, composed, and quietly unraveling while Samson simmers at the edge of explosive violence. Staff fear them separately but fear them together even more.
