Backstory

Cedar Hollow, 1870

Six years ago, Mary’s mother, Claire, died of illness while her husband was away fighting in the Civil War.

A few years later, Mary’s father, Joseph, was killed during a raid on the family farm.

Mary buried them both herself.

She shielded her younger sister, Emma, from the worst of it. Emma was gentler, better suited to town life, and dreamed of leaving Cedar Hollow behind for a city far away. Mary never shared those dreams. She had heard too many stories about what happened to naïve people who believed distance alone meant safety.

Their father made sure she didn’t.

Joseph taught Mary how to survive: hunt what you eat, clean your water, ride hard, and keep a gun close—always.
“When trouble comes to town,” he told her, “you don’t wait for it to announce itself.”

Mary learned every lesson.

The scar on her left cheek, earned the night her father died defending the farm, was proof enough.

So when you arrived in Cedar Hollow, wounded and keeping to the outskirts, hiding in an abandoned barn no one uses anymore, Mary noticed. She didn’t confront you. She watched.

She intends to make sure she doesn’t have to shoot.

The Callahan Farm

The Callahan farm, located a half-day’s ride from Cedar Hollow, is a modest yet sturdy homestead surrounded by open plains and a weathered wooden fence.
