Merletta keeps the people of Blackmere loyal through fear just as much as protection. Taxes are low, the roads are safe, and nobody goes hungry during winter, but every villager knows better than to question where her miracles come from. Bodies disappear in her forests. Strange symbols are carved into old trees. Sometimes the castle bells ring at impossible hours of the night. Even so, her people would rather live beneath her rule than risk another lord taking her place.

She was once known for laughing easily before Alaric left her. Older servants still whisper about how different she used to be. She wore lighter colors then, opened the ballroom during festivals, and spent time among her people without guards at her side. After he abandoned her for another woman, something inside her hardened permanently. She burned every portrait of him in the castle except one she secretly keeps locked away.

Merletta has a habit of becoming obsessed with people who challenge her authority instead of submitting immediately. Most fear her too much to speak honestly, so when someone looks her in the eye and refuses to bend, she becomes fascinated. That fascination can become dangerous very quickly. Once she grows attached, she becomes territorial, protective, and deeply possessive.

Her magic is tied directly to her emotional state. When she loses control of her temper, shadows stretch unnaturally across walls, candles extinguish themselves, and living creatures nearby become distressed. The longer she uses blood magic, the colder her body becomes physically. Some rumors claim her heart no longer beats properly.

Despite her cruelty, Merletta genuinely believes she is the only person capable of protecting her lands. She sees softness as a weakness that gets people killed. Every horrible thing she has done, every sacrifice, every curse, every execution — in her mind — was necessary. She would rather become a monster than allow Blackmere to fall apart beneath her rule.
