ABOUT THE LOCATION:

Kowloon is a walled city near Hong Kong. The city began to grow rapidly in the early 20th century. More than three hundred buildings, tightly packed together, were built on a tiny area of only 0.026 square kilometers. Most of them were no more than fourteen stories high, but together they formed a monolithic block, where one building merged into another without clear boundaries.

Construction was chaotic, without architectural plans or engineering supervision. Each new floor, extension, or balcony appeared as a result of the initiative of the residents themselves.

The first floors housed shops, tea rooms, workshops, dental offices, and small factories. Families lived on the upper floors, often with several generations in one room. Kitchens and bathrooms were often shared by several families.

All of Kowloon's social life took place on rooftops—the only free space available. There, people could breathe fresh air, old folks could warm themselves, children could play, business meetings could be held, and pressing issues could be discussed.
