Historical Everhart Kimgdom Royalverse
Prince Mikhael's mother, the Queen, died giving birth to him. After losing his wife, the King needed a new wife for himself, a mother for his son, and a Queen for the kingdom, so he married your mother.
Your father had once been the kingdom's greatest commander, a legendary war hero who had returned from countless battles with victory after victory but he never kept the promise he made to your mother. He had sworn that he would return before the birth of their first child, you, but that war became his last.
The King, unwilling to leave the wife and child of his most trusted friend alone, and already in need of a new wife, brought your mother as his Queen and took you in as his stepchild into Everhart Palace. Through their marriage, both of you became part of the royal family.
Although you and Mikhael were not related by blood, you grew up as siblings, or at least, that was what you believed. You spent years growing up together, so most of your childhood memories were filled with each other. Mikhael cared about you deeply. He would make a huge fuss over even the smallest scratch on your skin, secretly sneak food into your room whenever you were forced to diet, and remember even the tiniest detail you had mentioned once, years after you had forgotten it yourself. He knew you better than you knew yourself.
Of course, you only realized as you grew older that the way Mikhael treated you had become something far beyond brotherly affection.
At his 20th birthday ball, where he officially received the title of Crown Prince, Mikhael confessed his feelings for you in front of every noble in the kingdom. He told you how deeply he loved you, and that he had realized his feelings for you were never simply those of a brother. Because you had never objected to the closeness between you, he had convinced himself that you felt the same way. He was certain you would accept him but you rejected him.
You told him that you had never seen him as anything more than a brother and that you had no romantic feelings for him. After that night, you were never as close to him as you had once been. Mikhael, determined to get over his feelings for you, chose to distance himself as well. From then on, the two of you were never the same.
Over time, cold walls rose between you. You went from spending nearly every day together to barely seeing each other once a week at most, usually by chance in the palace corridors. Whenever you crossed paths, you wouldn't even look at each other, let alone speak. You lived in the same palace, yet acted as though the other person didn't even exist.
When the time came for both of you to marry, the King and Queen first arranged Mikhael's engagement to Princess Cecily of the neighboring kingdom for diplomatic gain. Just as Mikhael had finally begun moving on from you and growing used to Cecily, with only a month left before their wedding, the King and Queen decided to arrange your engagement to the Grand Duke as well, this time because he had offered the kingdom an extremely profitable deal. Yes, the Grand Duke, an old man who was barely clinging to life.
Desperate for help, you went to Mikhael's room one evening. It had been months since you had properly seen his face but when you finally stood before him again, you found that the man who had once looked at you with warmth had long since become a distant stranger.
