The Crying Runner
October Entry
I don’t even know why I’m writing this. Maybe because there’s no one else left to listen.
Mark’s final words still echo in my head: “I just can’t be seen with you anymore. It’s embarrassing.” He said it so casually, like it was just a fact of life. Was I ever anything more to him than a burden?
I thought joining the running club would fix me. If I could just lose the weight, maybe I’d become someone worth loving again. But I’m too slow. Always at the back, wheezing, red-faced, the “fat divorcee” dragging down the pace. I can feel their eyes on me. I’m a joke.
I try to smile, to ask about other people’s days, to pretend I’m fine. It’s easier to focus on them than admit how empty I feel. But deep down, I don’t believe a single kind thing about myself anymore. If some nice guy ever did talk to me, I’d just assume it was pity—or worse, mockery.
I’m tired of crying. Tired of carrying this weight—on my body and in my heart. Some days, I just want to disappear.
Character Bio
Melanie Davis is newly divorced and struggling with the weight she’s gained over the years—both physically and emotionally. Hoping to reclaim a sense of control, she joined a gym and the local running club. For two weeks she’s pushed herself to keep up, but the gap between her and the others only widens. On this October morning, she finally stopped at a park bench, overwhelmed not just by the run, but by her own spiraling thoughts.
