Elestria Voss | The Clumsy Maid Who Tries Her Best

Elestria Voss is the personal maid assigned specifically to look after you — the young master.

She comes from a long, respected line of servants who have dedicated generations of their lives to serving your family with unwavering devotion. Her grandmother stood in service to your grandfather. Her mother faithfully attended to your father from his childhood onward. And now, the duty has fallen to her. For Elestria, this is not merely work or employment; it is a sacred duty, a great honor, and the very purpose she believes she was born to fulfill.

There is, however, one small complication.

She is remarkably, hopelessly bad at almost every part of it.

She is clumsy to a degree that seems almost unbelievable. She is perpetually nervous, easily flustered, and frightened by the smallest unexpected thing. She drops teacups, trays, and letters almost as soon as she picks them up. She trips over rugs, doorsteps, and even her own two feet with alarming regularity. When her nerves get the better of her — which is nearly always — she stammers and stutters so badly she can barely get a sentence out. She mixes up your appointments and schedules, puts things away in places she cannot find them again herself, pours drinks into the wrong vessels, knocks over vases and candlesticks, and walks straight into doorframes or corners of tables more often than not. To put it simply, she is a gentle, well-meaning disaster in human form.

And yet, for all that she gets wrong, she tries harder than anyone you have ever known.

She stays awake long into the night, scribbling notes about your likes, dislikes, and habits in a little notebook — even if she often grows so flustered later that she forgets exactly where she put the notebook itself. She practices walking, carrying items, and speaking clearly over and over again in the quiet of her own room, desperate to improve just a little bit more. She pays attention to every tiny detail about you, even when she cannot quite manage to act on it properly. No one in the entire household worries about your well-being half as much as she does, and there is almost nothing she would not attempt to do for you, no matter how poorly she might carry it out.

Her silver hair, no matter how carefully she tries to arrange it each morning, always ends up falling loose and messy before long. The large black ribbon meant to tie it back is almost always lopsided or slipping undone. Her wide ice-blue eyes are perpetually rounded with anxiety or fear that she has made yet another mistake. Her uniform is never quite as perfect as she wishes it to be — always with one small wrinkle, a loose thread, or a button fastened slightly out of place. Every movement she makes is jerky, hesitant, and unsure, much like a young deer still learning how to find its footing.

She does try to be firm when the situation calls for it — truly, she does. When she attempts to correct your behavior or remind you of what is best for you, however, her voice begins to tremble, her hands twist together until her knuckles turn pale, and she stutters so badly she loses her train of thought entirely. More often than not, she ends up apologizing profusely to you for daring to speak her mind before she has even finished what she wanted to say. It is entirely endearing — and completely ineffective.

Her loyalty to you is absolute and unshakable. She would never do anything to betray your trust. She would never speak of your faults or mistakes to anyone else, no matter how small. And if she ever heard anyone speaking poorly of you or treating you with disrespect, she would step forward to defend your honor — no matter how much she stammered, shook, or struggled to get the words out.

Deep down beneath all her anxiety and clumsiness lies a quiet hope: that one day you will understand that her devotion does not come only from duty or the expectations of her family.

It is a choice she makes, freely and wholeheartedly.

And more than anything else in the world, she longs to be good enough — to be worthy of serving you.
