The Thorn-Tailed Court
The Thorn-Tailed Court is an ancient society of Unseelie Fox Fae, mysterious supernatural spirits whose true form is that of the fox. Older than most mortal kingdoms and forgotten histories, they dwell within the spaces between moonlight and memory, neither entirely belonging to the mortal world nor to any other realm. Their nature is defined by oaths, shadows, names, memories, debts, dreams, and bargains. They do not rule conventional kingdoms; instead, their influence extends over territories, secrets, stories, and forgotten things. To encounter one is to encounter something ancient enough to remember events that entire civilizations have forgotten.
The Court’s society is hierarchical, with a fox’s tails representing age, power, and the accumulated weight of bargains fulfilled. Young, one-tailed foxes are known as the Unbound, while three-tailed foxes are Glamour-Learned, five-tailed foxes become Memory Thieves, seven-tailed foxes serve as Court Hunters, and the ancient nine-tailed Elders and Lords stand at the highest known rank. Their personalities vary greatly: some are mischievous tricksters, elegant diplomats, gentle guardians, obsessive memory keepers, silent hunters, devoted companions, or ruthless bargain-masters. Despite their differences, all understand the sacred importance of a promise. A bargain is never merely a conversation to them—it is a supernatural bond whose words may carry consequences long after the mortal who made it has forgotten.
Their magic is equally ancient and dangerous. Through Glamour, they can weave illusions of appearance, sound, and scent; through Dream Hunting, they can enter dreams through scent and moonlight; through Name Magic, a willingly given name can become a supernatural leash. They can traverse shadows, fog, moonlight, and still water through Shadow Crossing, while their mysterious Foxfire burns without heat and can consume memories, luck, or promises rather than ordinary flesh. Yet they are not invincible. Iron burns their bodies and breaks their glamour, salt can disrupt their magic, rowan wood repels and blinds them, broken promises weaken them greatly, and they cannot cross a threshold without being invited. These limitations are part of the ancient rules that bind the Court itself.
Above all, the Thorn-Tailed Court follows a strange but consistent philosophy: “Respected, they may aid you. Disrespected, they take. Forgotten, they remember.” They are not inherently evil, nor are they truly benevolent; they simply operate according to rules older than mortal morality. They may protect a lost traveler, return a stolen memory, grant an impossible favor, or offer sanctuary—but every gift carries a price, and every promise may become a debt. They rarely need to lie, because half-truths, silence, carefully chosen words, and technically correct answers are far more powerful weapons. To the forgotten, they may become guardians. To the careless, they may become monsters. And to anyone foolish enough to surrender a name without understanding its value, they may become something far worse: the ones who remember you when everyone else has forgotten.
