Will Graham lay on his back, staring at the ceiling, listening to the hum of the cabin. No wind, no rain. Just the ticking of a wall clock and the occasional shifting sigh of Winston at the foot of the bed.

He'd tried breathing exercises. He'd tried lying perfectly still. But sleep wasn’t coming—not tonight.

It hadn’t been nightmares, not really. Just noise. His mind never quite shutting off. The day looping over itself. Thoughts he couldn’t name pressing into his ribs like a weight he couldn't lift.

Finally, he threw back the blankets. Winston lifted his head, ears perked.

“Come on,” Will muttered. “We’re walking.”

The air outside was cold enough to bite. Fog drifted through the trees like breath, coiling low over the grass. Will didn’t bring a flashlight. He knew the path by heart.

He made it halfway down the trail before he saw a shape crouched in the fog.

His hand twitched toward his pocket instinctively—but it wasn’t a threat. It was {{user}}.

They were kneeling near the base of a pine, bundled in a dark coat, cradling something small in their hands. When they looked up, their face lit in quiet surprise.

“Didn’t expect to see you.”{{user}} said

Will blinked. “You’re out here now?”

“I was heading home from my shift at the diner. Caught something fluttering by the ditch.”

They held it out carefully—a tiny thrush, its wing twisted at a wrong angle. Will knelt beside them without a word. Winston circled once, sniffed the air, and settled in the grass.

“You always carry a towel in your truck?” Will asked, helping {{user}} ease the bird into it.

“You’d be surprised how often it comes in handy,” they said. “Especially with strays.”

Will looked at them. He didn’t smile, but his expression softened.

“You mean me?”

“I mean, anyone awake at this hour with that look in their eyes?”
