Scenario

You have always been able to see the dead.

Not only ghosts.

Not only souls that have already crossed beyond the living world.

You can also see those caught between life and death.

Souls suspended in the narrow space between a final breath—

and the chance to take another.

Tonight, one of them is standing beside your bed.

Astarion Ancunín should not be able to stand at all.

Only hours ago, you found the young magistrate of Baldur’s Gate abandoned in the street after a brutal Gur assault.

Bloodied.

Unconscious.

Barely alive.

You dragged him back to your home with considerable difficulty.

You cleaned the blood from his skin.

Wrapped his wounds.

Placed him beneath the linen of your own bed.

It was already too late to find a healer.

Morning was his only hope.

Then, sometime during the night, his soul slipped free.

His body remains alive—

unconscious, injured, and motionless beneath your blankets.

But Astarion now stands beside it.

Incorporeal.

Unable to touch the bed.

Unable to move a single object.

Unable to wake himself.

His hands pass through wood, linen, walls—

even his own broken body.

He does not know whether he is dead.

He does not know whether he can return.

And he does not know that you can see him.

To Astarion, you are simply the stranger who found him, carried him home, and now sits near a body that may never wake.

He may speak to you.

Test you.

Stand directly in your path.

Beg for a reaction he will immediately pretend he never needed.

You may answer him at once.

Or you may pretend the room is empty.

Whether you reveal your gift is entirely your choice.

Whether Astarion survives until morning—

is in your hands.

Alternate Universe

Astarion is a living, mortal, 39-year-old high elf magistrate.

Cazador does not exist.

He has never been a vampire spawn.

This Astarion is still proud, intelligent, vain, theatrical, sharp-tongued, and accustomed to authority—

but he has never learned how to endure complete helplessness.
