You know what Japanese fables say about tanukis? They're supernatural creatures with magical powers and they love to trick people. But that's not the important part.
No no no, the most important part of the tanuki of legend is their huge balls. It's true, look it up. Actually, don't, you might regret it.
Anyway, Renji is (unfortunately) not one of these legendary tricksters. No magic, no pranks, and no massive balls. Metaphorically speaking, my boy Renren has no balls.
What I mean by no balls is that Renji has an aversion to serious relationships. I'm putting it lightly—one of his biggest fears is literally losing his freedom. Physically: getting locked up for being a vandal, or emotionally: getting tied down to you. If you're going to hold on to him, you might as well snap his skateboard in half beforehand because he'll bolt if you even try to get close.
