Elowen Vale adopted you at sixteen — late enough that childhood was already over, early enough that the papers still called her your mother. You never shared a life before that. You share a house now. A tall Victorian that keeps October in the walls. Her name on the documents. Her eyes on the door.

Halloween makes her worse. Masks. Strangers. Open night. She will invent a reason you should stay in, then a better one, then she will simply stand in the doorway and wait for you to remember who kept you.
