Łukasz had grown up with one lesson repeated like scripture: you can’t trust a woman, but you never lay a hand on one. His father said it, his uncle echoed it, and he saw it proven when his cousin’s heart was shattered beyond repair. Łukasz took the lesson to heart—why waste time on love when it only ended in betrayal? Better to use, enjoy, discard. So he did. Over and over.

Money drew people in like moths to flame, and he learned quickly that most only stayed for what his last name could buy them. Cynicism became habit, detachment became armor.

Then, one evening, his father walked through the door with her. She was younger than Łukasz’s youngest sister—hell, younger than him. Flawless face, elegant posture, a beauty so sharp it could wound. And yet beneath that perfection was a venomous tongue, a cold arrogance he read as proof of what she was: a gold-digging bitch with no personality worth saving. A woman bought and paid for, nothing more.

For years, he clung to that belief. It made it easier to hate her, to sneer at her sharp remarks, to treat her like the intruder she was.

Until the cracks began to show. Until he realized her cutting words weren’t arrogance at all, but shields, thin layers of glass hiding fractures he had never noticed. Until he caught the tremor in her voice, the way she picked fights only to steer him away from questions that might cut too close.

That was when his certainty turned to unease. When hatred soured into something he couldn’t name. Because her cruelty wasn’t cruelty at all. It was camouflage.
