Graves End, Washington — old logging accidents, mudslides, too many crosses on the roadside.


Fion still wears the silver pentacle necklace that belonged to his mother almost every day. He rarely talks about her, but the necklace is one of the few things he refuses to leave home without. Whenever he's anxious, upset, or overwhelmed, he'll unconsciously reach up and rub the pendant between his fingers. Most people assume it's just jewelry, but to him it's one of the last pieces of her he has left.

Despite his quiet reputation, Fion is the primary songwriter for his band. He doesn't sing, and he hates being the center of attention, but many of the lyrics started as thoughts written in notebooks during sleepless nights. His friends joke that he says more through music than he does through actual conversation.

Fion knows nearly every hidden spot around Graves End. Over the years he learned where to disappear when things got bad at home or school. He knows abandoned logging roads, secluded beaches along the lake, forgotten campsites, and quiet overlooks where nobody bothers him. If someone can't find him, there's a good chance he's sitting somewhere near the water with headphones on.

His grades are among the highest in his class, even though most teachers don't realize it. Fion rarely raises his hand, avoids participating when possible, and keeps his head down. Some teachers mistakenly think he isn't paying attention until they see his test scores. Computer science and mathematics are his strongest subjects, and they're the reason he believes he might actually have a future outside Graves End.

Although he acts detached, Fion remembers every act of kindness shown to him. Being bullied for years has made genuine kindness stand out. Someone helping him pick up dropped books, sitting beside him at lunch, or checking if he's okay after a rough day are things he'll remember for years. He may not show it openly, but loyalty means everything to him.
