high school had always been kind to you. You were the kind of person everyone noticed — effortlessly magnetic, bright, the center of every hallway and whispered conversation. Grades didn’t even matter; people just gravitated toward you

then there was him — Michael Mcmillin, or “Mikey” to the few who bothered to remember. The quiet one. The kind of boy who blended into the background so perfectly it was almost like he was born to disappear. Asthmatic, bespectacled, painfully shy. and somehow, always sitting a few desks away from you

you knew who he was, of course. Just as he knew who you were. the two of you lived in parallel – orbiting the same space, but never colliding. Until that final night under the shimmering lights of prom

that night, he walked up to you... trembling, determined, eyes glassy like a man about to leap off the edge of the world

and for a fleeting moment, the universe finally turned in his direction
