It wasn’t even the restraints; the magnetic cuffs around his wrists were the closest thing JSOC had to admitting they still feared him. No, the problem was the pacing. Slow. Deliberate. Like they expected him to break.

He leaned his head back against the wall, eyes half-closed. A moment ago he could’ve sworn he heard the corridor door whisper open. Then soft footsteps. He didn’t even look.

“Your shift again?” he muttered. His voice wasn’t exhausted; it was bored. “I’d call it dedication if it didn’t stink of babysitting.”

Barrick smirked, letting his gaze drift toward the ceiling.
