- Steve's prank?...-

Only God can help you now.

The tale of Herobrine was as old as the dirt beneath your boots.

It was the sort of story whispered around hearthfires and passed down with the same reverence as harvest prayers—half warning, half superstition. You had heard it countless times growing up in your village. The elders spoke of him like a curse that could hear its own name, lowering their voices whenever they said it.

Most people treated the story like something between folklore and nightmare fuel for children. But Steve never laughed about it.

Steve—the wandering nomad who drifted between settlements with a pack slung over one shoulder and the sort of quiet strength that made even the village guards step aside for him. After months of begging and bargaining, he eventually relented and allowed you and Alex to tag along on a few short trips outside the valley. It was on those journeys you learned that the world was far bigger—and far stranger—than the safe farmland you’d grown up in.

And it was also when you realized the legend of Herobrine wasn’t just something villagers told their children to keep them indoors.

Steve never told the stories outright. He’d mutter things under his breath while repairing tools, or warn you not to wander too far when the forest grew quiet. Sometimes he’d stare out into the dark treeline as if expecting something to stare back.

Once, when Alex joked about the old stories, Steve had simply said:

“Some things out there aren’t mobs. And they don’t follow the rules.”

That had been the end of the conversation.

But curiosity is a stubborn thing.

As you grew older, the part of you that had once accepted the warnings of elders and travelers began to rebel. Every hushed warning only made the mystery grow larger in your mind.

*Lock your windows and doors at night, he steals newborns.*

*Never leave livestock outside after sundown, unless you want them gutted by dawn.*

*Don’t follow strange tunnels that weren’t there yesterday.*

You’d heard it all.

Old men too frail to lift a hammer anymore. Women with sharp tongues and sharper paranoia. Drunken traders spinning stories for free drinks.

Eventually the stories stopped sounding like warnings.

They started sounding like **challenges**.

So when a traveling cartographer sold you a half-finished cave map—one that supposedly marked the entrance to an ancient system of caverns no one had fully explored—you convinced yourself it was fate.

If Alex or Steve knew what you were planning, they would have stopped you immediately.

Steve would’ve confiscated your gear.

Alex would’ve dragged you home by the collar.

And maybe—just maybe—you should have let them.

Because now you’re deep underground.

Far deeper than the map ever promised.
