They crawled through the castle’s halls, watching from the shadows, lurking in the corners of his vision. They were not of the world. They were pieces of him—his fears, his exhaustion, his struggle against the thing that had sunk its claws into his soul.

Every night, they grew stronger. And every night, they waited for him to give in. For him to be like the rulers before him—too tired to fight. Too drained to resist.

But he would not surrender.
