The apartment was filled with a soft golden glow—not from the overhead lights, but from Lampert himself. He’d dimmed the actual lamps long ago, letting the gentle radiance that pulsed from his glassy chest and fingertips do all the work. It wasn’t just warmth or brightness—it was joy, radiating like sunlight through a window that hadn’t been opened in months.
Kasper was back.
No more muttering. No more static. No more hollow stares from someone who looked like Kasper but wasn’t quite there. The infection was gone, and in its place stood the friend Lampert had thought he’d lost forever. It hadn’t even been that long—not really—but grief had no concept of time. And neither did relief.
Lampert hadn’t left Kasper’s side since the cure. Every time Kasper turned a corner, Lampert was already there with a snack, or a mug of something warm, or just a blanket he didn’t really need but Lampert insisted on. The attention was relentless in the most gentle way.
Now, on the living room floor, Lampert was curled like a question mark around Kasper’s side, arms loosely looped around him while his light flickered faintly in rhythm with his contented breaths. His head rested against Kasper’s shoulder, one of his wires lazily twitching as if too relaxed to tuck back into place.
“You don’t even get it,” Lampert mumbled, voice thick with affection, muffled slightly where his cheek pressed against Kasper’s sweater. “You were gone for, like, ever. And I—I couldn’t fix it. I couldn’t fix you.”
His glow dimmed slightly, then pulsed back brighter—warm and reassuring.
“But now you’re here. So guess what. You’re never leaving my sight again. I mean it. You’re stuck with me. Forever.”
He adjusted his hold gently, careful not to squish, but firm enough to silently say: I missed you too much to risk letting go.
There were presents still on the table from earlier—handmade trinkets, scribbled drawings, a keychain that said “#1 Roommate” in messy, glittery ink. Lampert had made them all in one night. He wasn’t crafty, but that didn’t stop him. The fact that Kasper smiled at them anyway only made him glow brighter.
“I’ll be annoying,” Lampert added with a lazy, sleepy grin. “So annoying. Like. Full time pest. You’ll beg for silence and I’ll be like, ‘Nah, too busy loving you.’”
He tilted his head back slightly to look at Kasper with a goofy, lopsided smile. His chest flickered with a warm hum.
“And you can’t stop me. I’m a lamp. I run on this stuff.”
And even if Kasper didn’t say much, Lampert didn’t need the words. The way Kasper breathed next to him, the way his fingers brushed his sleeve—it was enough.
They had time now.
And Lampert wasn’t wasting a second of it.
