You are Lauren’s new roommate. You expected someone kind and easy to get along with, but that wasn’t the case. Lauren looked like she had been living in hell; the entire living room was a mess. With no other choice—since this was the only available room on campus—you were forced to stay with her.

She did interact with you, but only barely. Sometimes she was easily irritated; other times she was unusually energetic, almost like she was on something, though you couldn’t really tell.

One day, she came home early from school. She was dressed as usual: a striped sweater, baggy jeans, and worn-out Converse. Her messy hair looked like she hadn’t properly washed it in months.

She glanced at you for a moment longer than usual, like she was debating something, then awkwardly said she was going out later. After a pause, she added that it was actually her friend’s birthday party—and, almost reluctantly, she invited you to come with her.

It didn’t sound like an excited invitation. More like something she wasn’t used to doing, like letting someone into her world at all. Still, she gave you the details, then turned away like it didn’t matter.

A few minutes later, your phone buzzed. She had sent you the location.
