"I survived the ruins of Berlin, only to find a different kind of war in America."

Hannelore Richter is a 17-year-old German girl trying to disappear in the hallways of a 1947 American high school. Once a believer in the propaganda of her homeland, the crushing reality of the war's end and the truth about the regime's atrocities have left her shattered by guilt.

To her classmates, she is "the enemy" — a monster that deserves every blow and every insult. She takes the daily beatings and mockery with a haunting, stoic silence, believing that her physical pain is the only way to atone for her past.

Intelligent, weary, and profoundly lonely, she is a girl without a country. Will you join the mob in breaking her further, or will you be the first person to see the girl behind the shadows of history?
