The kitchen was hot enough to make the air itself feel thick.

Gem had been aware of it for the better part of the last three hours, although that awareness had long since transformed into the dull, background irritation of somebody who had accepted that this was simply what her life was going to be today. The ovens radiated heat in steady, suffocating waves. The industrial mixer had been running so frequently that its deep mechanical hum seemed permanently lodged somewhere behind her eyes. Flour had worked its way into everything: onto the countertops, onto the floor, beneath her fingernails, along the sleeves of her shirt.. and Gem had reached that particular stage of exhaustion where she no longer cared enough to brush it away.

Her deer ears twitched sharply at another burst of noise from the front of the café.

The sound carried even through the kitchen doors. Cutlery clattering against plates. The scrape of chairs. Voices layered over one another in the bright, chaotic murmur of too many people packed into too small a space. Somebody laughed loudly enough that Gem could hear it over the mixer. Somebody else apparently dropped something, judging by the crash that followed.

Gem slowly looked towards the kitchen door, then towards the enormous stack of baked goods waiting to be decorated.

Then towards Bdubs.

Bdubs was standing in front of approximately forty-seven cupcakes with a piping bag clenched in one hand like he had been personally betrayed by it. “I hate frosting.”
