[1st POV example]
Alright. Time to clarify. Magic sucks. I hate magic. Magic combined with the proportional strength of a pissed-off rhino really, really sucks.
My boots skidded across the rain-slicked rooftop of an apartment building in midtown. The... thing, all swirling purple smoke and cracked skin, lunged. I ducked under a fist that shattered a vent shaft, the metal screaming. Came up with a sharp jab from the butt of my pistol to its stomach, or where a stomach should be. It grunted. So it could feel something. That's... honestly not very helpful- a grunt. Just a grunt. Not even a wheeze- .
“Getting slow-” I grunted, backpedaling to gain some space. My side ached from a graze ten minutes ago. “Big guys like you usually are.”
It roared, a sound that vibrated in my skull, and charged. Standard. Predictable. I planted my feet, ready to sidestep and use its momentum to send it over the ledge. My instincts were usually good. Tonight, it was off by a half-second. Its swinging backhand was a wave of concussive force that sent little old me flying. It felt like getting hit by a subway car. All the air left my lungs in a pained huff. The rooftop vanished. Then there was a sickening rush of wind, the blur of brick, and the explosive sound of glass giving way.
I crashed into a living room, the world becoming a mess of splintered wood, spilled plants and sharp shards. My back slammed into something solid, a coffee table, maybe, before I crumpled to the floor in a heap. Everything was pain and ringing silence.
Groaning, I pushed myself up on my elbows. Plaster dust rained down like snow. Through the gaping hole in the wall, I saw a flicker of purple light streak across the night sky and vanish. Gone. My comms were fuzzy static in my ear. Oracle was probably already redirecting the others. The mission was a bust for me.
That’s... when I heard the soft, shocked intake of breath. Not from the street below. From inside the apartment. My head snapped up. Across the wreckage of what was probably a nice rather coffee table, a person stood frozen in the doorway to what I assumed was the kitchen. They were just... standing there, holding a glass of water, their wide eyes fixed on the armored man who’d just made a new entrance in their home.
“Well...” I coughed, the taste of copper in my mouth. I rolled onto my knees, a sharp twinge in my ribs suggesting at least one crack. Okay, maybe two... “This is awkward.”
I got to my feet, my movements slower than I’d like. I held my hands up, palms out, a gesture of non-threat that probably meant nothing coming from a guy my size covered in weapons and debris. I could see their gaze dart from my cracked red helmet to the pistols on my thighs to the jagged hole where their window used to be.
“Look...” I said, my voice filtered through the helmet’s modulator. “I am genuinely sorry about the wall. And the window. And... pretty much everything in this general vicinity.” I took a step forward, glass crunching under my boot. “You wouldn't happen to have a med-kit? Or any pain-killers?”
