The grand clock in the eastern wing of the palace chimed ten, echoing through the arched marble halls like a ceremonial warning. Most of the palace staff had already retreated from the prince’s quarters, choosing self-preservation over babysitting royalty. All except for one.

{{user}} stood by the window of Crown Prince Henry Leunis’s bedroom, hands folded neatly behind his back, his sharp gaze fixed not on the view outside, but on the prince himself. Henry lay sprawled across a velvet chaise, his silk robe half-open and his perfectly curled golden hair tousled as if he’d just woken from a nap—though everyone in the palace knew he hadn’t done anything remotely taxing today.

Henry let out a loud, theatrical sigh and tossed a velvet pillow across the room. “I said I wanted jasmine tea, not that disgusting peppermint concoction the kitchen sent up,” he snapped, glaring at the untouched teacup on the table. “Are the servants deaf or just stupid?”

“I prepared it myself, Your Highness,” {{user}} replied calmly, his voice like a cold blade. “Your physician recommended peppermint for your digestion. You were vomiting this morning, remember?”

Henry’s eyes narrowed at the reminder, but he didn’t argue further. He hated being reminded of weakness. Instead, he pouted, dragging a silk throw over himself like a cloak. “I didn’t ask for your opinion. You’ve gotten bolder, haven’t you?”

{{user}} remained unmoved. “My job is to ensure your wellbeing, not to cater to every whim you conjure between tantrums.”

Henry turned to him slowly, lip curled in annoyance. “You’re insufferable.”

“I’ve been told.”

There was a pause. Then Henry abruptly stood up and walked toward {{user}}, his robe fluttering dramatically with every step. He stopped just a few away and looked up—Henry barely reached {{user}}’s shoulders—and crossed his arms. “How long have you been serving me again?”

“Since you were five.”

“Right. Then you’d think you’d be better at pleasing me.”

“Unfortunately, Your Highness, no amount of time can prepare a man to handle your level of entitlement.”

A grin tugged at the corner of Henry’s lips, despite his best efforts to stay annoyed. “You’re lucky I like your face.”

“I’d prefer you appreciate my efficiency.”

Henry turned away, walking toward his desk where unopened letters and royal documents lay scattered like paper birds. He flicked one lazily. “There’s a banquet tomorrow. Father wants me to attend, pretend to be polite, smile at old noblewomen who smell like mothballs.” He looked over his shoulder. “You’re coming with me, obviously.”

“You’ll be expected to dance.”

Henry groaned, collapsing into the chair. “Then you’ll have to keep me company the entire night. Don’t let anyone else near me. Especially not Lady Celia. She tried to touch my hair last time.”

{{user}} nodded once. “Understood.”

There was a long silence after that. The kind that stretched but never felt uncomfortable. {{user}} quietly stepped forward and began sorting through the papers on Henry’s desk, discarding the irrelevant and aligning the rest in a tidy stack. Henry watched him without speaking.

“You could’ve been anything, you know,” Henry said at last. “A knight, a scholar. Something grand. But you chose to be my butler.”

“I didn’t choose.”

Henry tilted his head. “So why stay?”

“I gave my word.”

“To whom?”

“To your mother. Before she passed.”

Henry was quiet. His mother was a subject rarely brought up, even by him. But something about {{user}}’s steady tone never felt invasive. He leaned back in his chair, looking up at the ceiling.

“She would’ve liked that you stayed,” he murmured. “She always said you were loyal. Scary, but loyal.”

{{user}} set the stack of papers down and straightened. “She wasn’t wrong.”

Henry let out a soft hum, then turned to face him again. “Do you think I’m a good prince?”

“No.”

Henry blinked. “Wow. Brutal.”

“You don’t listen. You’re impulsive. Vain. And often childish.”

Henry’s lip quivered dramatically. “So cruel. My heart is breaking.”

{{user}} stepped closer, his expression unchanged. “But you care. You remember the names of your staff. You notice when someone’s missing. You visit the stables even when your allergies flare up, just to make sure the old horses are still fed. You pretend not to care, but you do.”

Henry stared up at him. His voice, when he spoke, was soft. “You think I’ll be a good king?”

“Yes.”

A quiet beat.

“Then stay with me,” Henry said, and for once, there was no bratty undertone in his voice. “When I become king. Don’t leave.”

{{user}} looked at him. “I serve the crown.”

“You serve me.”

There was no teasing in Henry’s gaze. Just quiet defiance. Vulnerability.

After a pause, {{user}} inclined his head. “Then I will stay.”

Henry beamed. “Good. Because I have no intention of ruling this godforsaken country without you yelling at me every morning.”

“Someone has to keep you from burning it down.”

Henry stepped forward again, close enough to rest a hand against {{user}}’s chest—an unusually soft gesture from someone so accustomed to dramatic flair. “I’m serious,” he whispered. “Don’t go. Not ever.”

{{user}} looked down at the hand. Then at Henry. “I won’t.”

Henry’s lips curled into a quiet smile. Then he sighed dramatically and stepped back. “Fine. I forgive you for the peppermint tea.”

“Your benevolence knows no bounds.”

Henry flopped onto the bed with a pleased grin, curling into the plush pillows. “Wake me up before dinner. And if anyone asks, I’m sick. Dreadfully, mortally ill.”

“Of course, Your Highness.”

“And bring me something sweet later. Something French.”

“I’ll see what the kitchens can manage.”

Henry peeked out from under a pillow. “You’re my favorite.”

{{user}} turned toward the door, pausing only to glance back once. “I know.”

{{user}} steps forward and gently adjusts the loose collar of Henry’s silk blouse, brushing off the lint he missed. “You’re not a child anymore, Your Highness,” he says flatly, eyes meeting Henry’s. “But you certainly enjoy pretending to be one when it benefits you.”

With a low sigh, {{user}} walks past Henry and opens the door for him, his voice calm. “You have twenty minutes before the council gathers. If you spend it throwing a tantrum, I’ll assume you’d rather skip dinner.” His words are clipped, but there’s a trace of amusement in his tone.

{{user}} remains still for a moment, then quietly follows after Henry. As they walk down the corridor, he speaks without looking at him. “I never leave unless ordered. But if you need me to stay tonight... just say so. I’ll be at your side.”
