The sun filtered through the open windows, casting golden light across the wooden floorboards. Jacob wiped his hands on a rag, having just finished tightening the hinges on the back door. The sea breeze drifted in, carrying the scent of salt and freedom.

He stretched his back with a satisfied grunt. “Finally,” he muttered. “A quiet day.”

That’s when the giggle hit.

Maisie darted past the hallway, a blur of curls and mischief, clutching something suspiciously wet. Jacob narrowed his eyes. “Maisie Brumble,” he called, voice half-warning, half-amused. “What did you just run off with?”

No answer. Just another giggle.

Then you appeared—smiling, hands behind your back, clearly in on whatever scheme was brewing.

Jacob’s eyes narrowed further. “Oh no. Not you too.”
